How come when we post pics, we blur out the plates.
I just posted for the first time yesterday, blacked out the plate, then thought to myself, "how come we do this?"
Anyone?

What I don't get is people blank out their licence plates, but they show off to eveyone how unique their car looks. If I can identify your car without plates, so can a car thief.
I am going to pick on Tax for a moment, but even if he covers his plates and VIN, I just have to follow the guy once on the road and eventually I will be able to steal his car (but I'm not into stealing station wagons) http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
His unique sticker design and misplaced foglights can be spotted a mile away!

unique sticker designs and misplaced foglights don't give you a persons address...license plates do.
unique sticker designs and misplaced foglights don't cut keys for you...VIN #'s do.
...I thought you were from Scarborough?

Some people in the US have also started removing/covering license plates for track days, time trials, and autocross competitions. I suppose they are paranoid about their insurance company finding a photo of their car at one of the affore-mentioned events and refusing coverage or "adjusting" their rates due to "risky" behaviour.
Some toprotege fakie plates woudl be allright. Weren't there some "Mazda" ones on the laptops at CIAS?

Show me which number on the vin tells you what and how to cut a key for a specific car and I'll believe you. Untill then I highly doubt, and almost 100% sure that it can't be done

I'm not sure how its done, but the dealership can do it! As noted HERE (http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19392), if you go to the right dealership, they'll do it w/out a hassel, too! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Mike is right on this one.
You CAN get a key cut from the vehicles VIN #.
I had to do it with my MX6 because I broke the key off in the door.
You normally have to show your ownership for them to do it, but at the time it was locked in the car.
A bit of smooth talking helped though.

Not to beat this to death, but I used to work at Saturn/SAAB as a detailer, and when I locked the customers keys in the car, and I did it allot, they took the VIN down and made a new key to get them out.
