Last week at the Hershey Ctr. Slalom event, I once again overheard a conversation.
Some Subaru guys were teaching or talking to another younger driver about clutchless shifting.
Yeah, that's right! CLUTCHLESS SHIFTING.
Sorta like aerobics without breathing, perhaps.
They said the idea was to match the proper engine speed and push in the shifter. This in-turn will make the gears slip into place at the right moment.
What's this all about?
Is it only for high performance driving and acceleration?
I take it is not recommended for us regular drivers. <:|

Some racers do it from time to time although almost all of the experienced racers and enthusiasts don't recommend it as there is no proven fact that "clutchless shifting" do improve lap times on the track. It is not worth their hassle to replace blown gear boxes all the time. Normally, this type of shifting can be done when you're upshifting, say from 2-3-4-5 shifts and you've mastered the precise shift points (rpms). They can also be done when downshifting, but this is where most of the damage occurs. It's basically like learning how to heel and toe, the problem is heel and toe always work but clutchless shifting don't at times, especially if you blow your gearbox... http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I used to do it on the bike from time to time. If you do go clutchless you have to change the oil more often as the gears will get a little more worn. Metal pieces in the oil aren't good http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif For most daily drivers the extra wear and tear just isn't worth it. It is too easy to f@#& up and break expensive parts. I don't do it any more nor would I reccomend it. If you're good on the clutch you'll be smoother and faster.

Mike, I can show you how to shift without clutching when we meet up. It's good for nothing in our syncho-meshed gear boxes but it impresses the chicks. This should only be used if the gear box can cope with it, such as a competition straight cut gearbox. Whilst it is possible to do this with a synchro-mesh gearbox, they really don't like it and after prolonged abuse will just end up on the road!!!

You should ask Pawood in the Motorsports section. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
