TOprotege - A Review Of 2006

2006 had come and gone. Another great year for the Toronto Protege Club. The year 2006 was the most active year for TOprotege. There were atleast 1 major meet every month and many mini-meets each week throughout the year. 2006 was the first year TOprotege migrated to the new forum software, with this upgrade, many new sponsors, donating members, vendors, and affiliates were brought aboard. 2006 brought a record breaking 13 new sponsors/vendors on board with TOprotege, bringing new deals and discounts to the members. With nearly 2400 members and over 150 active members, TOprotege continues to be one of the largest organized automobile club in Canada. Although the Mazda Protege had stopped production since 2004, this year, was the most active year for the Toronto Protege Club since its 2001 debut. Congratulations to all the members, officers, alumni, and sponsors for making this happen.

TOprotege Forum upgraded to vBulletin
On December 1st 2005, the Toronto Protege Club forum software was upgraded and launched to the public. With this long awaited upgrade, many positive changes were made to the club. In 2006, this forum software continues to be updated and changed to prevent cyber attacks. Much is planned for 2007 as the TOprotege website grows.

Feb 08, 2006 - Montana's Cookhouse "All you can eat ribs"
The official TOprotege event of 2006 started at Montana's Cookhouse. Montana's had their all you can eat ribs that day and members quickly ordered all seven flavours and built a huge mountain of ribs on the table. With the temperatures at around -7, many came with their winter beaters and proteges covered in road salt. It was a great start to 2006.

Feb 12, 2006 - Winter Cruise
TOprotege chose this date to run their winter cruise which is held annually. With limited sign up space, the 10 proteges that signed up got to see some of the nicest scenery in Ontario. Some chose to drive their proteges while others chose to be co-pilots in this event. The cruise started in dry pavement and soon turned into packed snow and mud as the cruise headed north. Although some members had troubles through a few corners on the icy roads, the cruise helped and went on.

March 28, 2006 - Dave and Buster Meet
The offical March event was held at Dave and Buster as a TOprotege Games Night for all the members. With 30 members in attendence, weather the food area, games, or the lounge, TOprotege members were seen everywhere. The group had lots of fun with the games sharing the credits and gaining points for prizes.

May 04, 2006 - Summer Kick Off Meet
Going along with what the club did for the past 3 years, TOprotege held the Summer Kick off Meet as a 3 part cruise. The cruise started from Scarborough Town Center, to Destiny Bubble Tea, to All Star Wings. With each stop being a mini meet of their own, there were many chances for photos and chatting about the new mods. TOprotege members from east and west got together for this event.

June 11, 2006 - Spring Blitz City Cruise
Being the Toronto Protege Club, TOprotege has never had an actual meet hosted in downtown city Toronto. This year changed it all, TOprotege hosted their official June event as a Spring Blitz City Cruise through downtown Toronto. With many shoppers just finishing up their shopping, many spotted the Toronto Protege Club cruise on the road and stopped to wave and applause. The cruise ended at Vinnie Zuchinni buffet where the road splits into eastside, westside, and farmside.

June 24, 2006 - Rookie Meet
The 4th annual TOP rookie meet was held at Yorkdale Shopping Centre as usual. New members and old members gathered to greet each other and indroduce themselves. It is a great meet for new memebers to get into the club and know what TOprotege meets are all about.

July 21, 2006 - Drive-In Meet
Members of the Toronto Protege Club got together at The 5 Drive-In for a movie. The movie was changed in the last few days from Pirates of the Carribean to Cars. At the meet, there were in total 5 proteges that showed up for this event. Weather 2 Proteges or 20 Proteges, this get together was unforgetable. Sitting in your own car tuned to the given radio channel and enjoying this movie was a very unique experience.

August 05, 2006 - Concept On Wheels Competition
TOprotege was invited to join one of concept on wheels show and shine event. Members showed up to compete in the audio competition and others showed up to check out all the rides. The event was setup very well with many events going on, never a dull moment. All the participating members had a great time showing off their rides and checking out other rides. Congratulations to Scooter for winning an award.

August 06, 2006 - Toronto Auto-X Championship
I was inviting to the 2006 Canadian AutoX Championships where 2 members of TOprotege participated in the race. It was the first time to an autox event and it was an unforgettable one. From a fairly stock corolla with stock exhaust to race spec WRX with its downpipe sticking out the side, the variety of cars running were amazing. This is a part of TOprotege I had never seen before. I had never expected that the Mazda Protege are able to keep up and compete with cars such as the infamous Integra Type R. The TOprotege Show Team uses water to wash and clean their cars while the TOprotege Motorsports Team uses water to spray cool their engine and tires. Truly unforgettable event. When is the next AutoX?

August 20, 2006 - Meeting Of the Mazda 2006
August 20th 2006 marked the fourth annual Meeting of the Mazda in Toronto Canada. Meeting of the Mazda was started in 2002 as one of the first inter-mazda club meet. Little did the organizers know, in 2003, 2004, and 2005, this event has grown to be the largest Mazda meeting in all of Canada. This year is no different, with the main sponsor being Mazda Canada, the prizes were aimed towards fans of the Mazda brand. Congratulations to Pro2nr for winning the Best Protege Sedan award and Junior for winning the Best Protege5 award.

August 27, 2006 - Dufferin Mazda Show and Shine
Every year, Dufferin Mazda hosts their show and shine event in their showroom. But somehow, TOprotege were never invited. 2006 changed all that, with an invitation out to TOprotege, members showed up to have their ride shown in the large dealership parking lot, many inside the show room. Although it was raining, members all enjoyed themselves at the event.

August 29, 2006 - Central Comeback Meet
With central offically returning to TOprotege, the first meet was held in an small lot near DVP and Eglinton. Many members showed up for this event and the celebrate central's comeback. Even more members from other sides drove out to this central meet. 2007 should be a great year for the refound central.

September 24, 2006 - 2006 Familia Picnic
The Toronto Protege Club gathered for the third TOprotege Familia Picnic since its coming in 2003. From the 18 proteges that showed up for this event last year, it amazingly jumped to over 47 proteges! The weather was nice to us and it only started to rain near the end of the event. Although some had left early while others arrived late, all of the members had a great time. Junior, being the events organizer, had organized this event very well. Food, games, prizes, votings, etc were all part of this year's Familia Picnic. The Show & Shine part of the day was an ongoing event thoughout the day and all entered vehicles were given voting cards so they could choose the car they felt was the "Best of Show". Congratulations to ricecookerP5 for taking 1st place, with dj_baby_tenshi and Pro2nr close behind, tied for second. A plaque was awarded to ricecooker for taking the top spot.

October 15, 2006 - C7 Performance Tour
Member of the Toronto Protege club gathered at 8:00am for this Tour/Cruise organized by the C7Performance Club. The club left the pre-meet location as planned at 8:45am and entered the AMC parking lot by 9:10am. We got to see the nearly 500 other cars present and enjoyed the show and shine. From Ford Escorts to fully kitted 350z, all kinds of cars showed up. The 20 or so members of TOprotege had no trouble at all finding our way, the group was lead by Kocakola and soon, we found other car clubs joining our line in the cruise. The beautiful weather along with the fall colors were amazing along the planned route. In total, 109km were driven.

November 18, 2006 - Importfest 2006
A number of members of the Toronto Protege Club participated in the 2006 Importfest located in the Rogers Center. Participants were required to 'roll-in' the day before which meant those who came from out of the city had to stay at a nearby hotel for the night. After a night of partying, members returned back to the Rogers Center for the official show. The line up outside was extremely long, from girls in extremely short skirts to men in full ski suits, everybody was lining up for tickets. Entering the Rogers Center, looking onto the floor was an experience of its own. Line after line of modified vehicles with music and flashing strobes excited the senses of spectators. The Toronto Protege Club cars were parked near the center of the dome floor and were mainly together. A few other proteges from other parts of the country also participated but were seperated from the TOprotege group. Weesh asking every model that walked by to pose on the Proteges was funny. Congratulations to Flip for winning 1st place "Best Protege" and Congratulations to Johnny5 for winning 3rd place "Best Protege".

December 02, 2006 - 2006 Christmas Dinner
This year, the Toronto Protege Club decided to keep with the tradition to hold their 2006 Christmas Dinner at Frankie Tomatto's. Every year, the sponsors of TOprotege offered many attractive prizes to the members. This year is no different. In total, 7 sponsors offered nearly $700 worth of prizes.

2006 Regional Autoslalom Series
This year, there are a few TOP members registered in the CASC-OR 2006 Mobil 1 Autoslalom Championship Series. In a small effort to open the club up to Autoslalom (very safe, cheap and fun grassroots form of racing your car legally), I figured I'd post up a bit of photos from our events around Ontario. "Around Ontario?", you say? Yes, the CASC-OR 2006 Mobil 1 Autoslalom Championship Series is a regional series that sort of "tours" around Ontario (mostly Southern Ontario) visiting different clubs. In essence, exposing those registered to the better Autoslalom venues in our region effectively creating the best-of-the-best series.

no, the one on the left was the old software.


Yes it was a great year for the club. lots of new members. I met a lot of new people and I've seen a lot of cool upgrades. It's just an indication of how fast this club is growing. 2006 was fun, but it's done. Looking forward to 2007 and whatever it brings!
