View Full Version : Welding of Mazdaspeed LSD

Here are a few pics of my welded mazdaspeed LSD. The welds are done using a stainless steel TIG weld. It is very important that these welds are done evenly so that the LSD remains properly balanced. The welds also do not require excessive heat, you may notice that some of the welding jobs posted on MSprotege have burn marks on the rivets near the welds.
If you have questions, please feel free to PM me.
* note, the pink gear on my LSD is a speedo gear and is not needed on the P5 or MSP. It is used on cars without ABS (MP3 for example), but does not hurt if it is present on either.

very nice. i'm sure this will take all the abuse you can throw at it. i read that people with a welded LSD notice more transmission noise/whine. any truth to this?

I'm not sure, I'll let you know though. Maybe they didn't change both bearings?

Guys I posted this thread as info for anyone who was wondering where, what and how to weld the mazdaspeed LSD. I think keeping it some what clean would be most beneficial.

Mike, I was just talking to Steve (NSN) and he has never heard of this problem with any of the welded lsds. He says he has done dozens, and this is the first time he heard any kind of nonsense like that. Where did you get this info?

where else, on US forums. lol. well, i was just wondering why it would make noise if any. perhaps that's what happens when it is not correctly welded and balanced? not sure.

It could be, but more likely it's bearing lash.

Just wondering why you went with a stainless filler rod? Does it weld better to cast or what?

I was recommended stainless, but you can also use nickel as well. The lsd is cast steel.

That's weird, because stainless is more brittle then carbon steel (which is what the LSD probably is).

I would also know where to get it welded...
and if the LSD is welded would it void the warranty on the LSD? or its not covered under warranty?

It will require removal and disassembly of your transmission to have the LSD welded.
Any competant machining shop SHOULD be able to do it for you, it's just a case of convincing them that they want to...

I was just going to mention Alex and the crew. I'm supposed to go there on Monday to get my exhaust finished up (assuming the install goes as planned on the weekend. Felix, mention it to Alex, I was thinking of approaching him to become an Affiliate/Sponsor too.

^ Good to know...
Now everyone just has to deal with:
- 2.5hrs to uninstall their tranny
- ?hrs to remove LSD
- ?hrs to reinstall LSD
- 2.5hrs to reinstall their tranny

^ 2.5 hrs for removal and install? lmfao. More like 4-5 hrs if you do it yourself.

Dealer charges 5hrs total for tranny swap.
My tranny swap took about 5hrs total (removal and reinstall). There were two of us there, but 80% of the time only one of us could be doing work.

^ yeah that's about right. Then when you add in the time for taking the tranny apart and installing the lsd, you can easily add another 2-3 hrs. and that's if everything goes somewhat smoothly. First timers doing this can expect to spend a good 10 hr day on this!

This is definately not a simple project like an intake, but do keep in mind, if you are gonna mod your car you always have two options. You can do the work yourself, and don't whine about the time it takes OR pay someone to do the work for you. :D

I was looking at protegegarage and their LSD kit, I was under the impression that it could be bolted in... is this true or does it actually have to be welded in?
P5dude2
March 17th, 2007, 05:58 PM
it is a directly replacement...the welding portion is a reinforcement of the LSD in case the rivets snap.
Logan
March 17th, 2007, 06:10 PM
ya, bolted in after the transmission is removed from the car and taken apart...
CrazyCaker
March 17th, 2007, 08:38 PM
not bolted in, rather "dropped in". But you must dissamble the tranny to do it, which is the fun part.
