View Full Version : My Turbo/Enigine Rebuild.....

September 7th, 2006, 12:30 PM
Well as I have already said the intail build was completed with major problems. Thanx to all that helped me out, and most of all Tekkie for driving over here to help out with the E-manage and drink my beer.:p
I was able to get the car to the dyno and start tuning. After 14 pulls we had the car up to 195whp/198tq @ 7psi on 5 degree of timing, and still more tuning. On the 15th pull, I think the guy exceeded my 6000rpm limit that I wanted him to shut down at. (NOT HIS FAULT), and the engine started to knock.
So we thought that it was something in the valve train. I limped it home, and started to rip off the head so I could get it checked.
Well that leads me to today....
Took it to Leitch Perfromance Engines here in Windsor, and had him look at the head. Well, this is where I near gave up on this project.
The knock was #3 cylinder actually hiting the head. He explained how it was most likely a rod bearing and that I was VERY lucky that I did not break a rod.
So now it is time to build the block and head. I will be having him do all of the work to this engine. He also is going to help me with getting parts. This guy is known to build some crazy ass engines. He showed me all kinds of builds that he has done. Very impressed! He has All computerized machining, including the newest flowbench (I don't know what kind).
So I guess I should have done it went I did the turbo. But what can I do.
So now I have to rip the whole thing apart again.

No dis-respect bud, put you pulled 15 runs on a dyno. What did you think was going to happen?? We don't exactly have the most reliable engines.

Fair point, but at the same time... 15 runs on a dyno isn't that much different that 15 laps on a track... my stock motor has done way more than that in a row at higher boost... furthermore... how else are you going to tune it properly?

Well today Gary had the enigne apart. Holy crap! all of the bearings were shot. The crank might not be reuseable. It has some heat/scoring damage on #3 rod journal. He is sending it out to be checked out and hopefully reground.
He will be ordering all of my stuff in the next couple days. He says that I should have it back in the car by ImportFest. But this year has been a no go for all shows so far, so it wont surpise me if I don't make it.

September 30th, 2006, 08:58 PM
Well my internet was out of a bit.... this is how its going...
Nothing,.... I'm gettin a little pissed off. I guess the crank went out to be checked on Friday. I am going down there Monday to order parts with him personally. Things really need to start moving along. The car is ready now for the engine. Switched out the plastic line for a SS braided line on my oil press gauge. My final LED came in for my gauge.
Might be ordering a StopTech BBK kit on Monday.
But I also want to buy a tool box and tonueau cover for my new truck. But funds are a little tight....
Hopefully won't miss ImportFest.:(

Well my new crank came in today. Gary is starting the head today. Have to order a couple new valves. Also my CF fuel door came in today. Too bad it was for a P5. Oh well, I removed the spot welds on my latch assmebly, and epoxyed it to the new one after dremeling out the other. Looks perfect!
Just waiting on my forged stuff, which should be in any day.
Looking good for Importfest!

Well its been along time, but it was worth it. The car is running perfect. I knew that it was going to be different but HOLY SHIT!!!!
I have one hell of a traction problem, the clutch is like a on/off button, and it puts me back in my seat when I hook up.
And thats on 7-9 psi and not really tuned that well.
I still have to fix the speedo problem, retighten a few things, change the oil, etc. aslo have a little whineing in the tranny but I think it has to do with 100% Lucus synthectic.
G35's ......... no prob.:D
Hemi's ........ no prob.:D
Still waitin for my first Stang and SRT-4:p
But I don't promote this kind of thing.
Thanks to all that have helped me out and I will be around next year fo sho.

I can't believe you blew your engine running that low a psi. I'm running higher than that with no forged internals and no problems. What else do you have done to the car. If your looking for good internals hit up Protegegarage.com. The guy there is really easy to deal with and if I'm not mistaken he has a deal on right now for a package containing Arias Pistons and Pauter rods specifically for the FS. Anyway good luck with everything... I'd really like to know how it turns out.

Well after some nice weather and new tuning gagets, I have it pretty much dailed in as much as she can go.
The only problem is that my small-ass turbo can't push more than 12psi consistantly. So......
Time for a T3/T4 and bigger intercooler.:D
I have been pricin around and so far Spooled Motorsport has one that will only make me have to modifiy my down pipe. I think this is a perk.
But also was thinkin that i should maybe go with a External WG. Any thoughts????

Well the turbo i have now is the same one i started with, but I found out its a "mut" turbo. It has the exhaust side of the Mitsu TD series turbo's but has a Mitsu TE4oh compessor. The TE series has WAY to small of ports as compared to the TD series.

Well since I am waiting for a few things to come in and gots some time to write up on this winters mods.
It all started when I went to store the car for this winter. I decided to take a few things off like my turbo and IM.First thing I noticed was the blow-by in the PCV valve ports of the IM. So I looked at the turbo, and thats when all this started.
The turbo was clean, no oil? I was like wtf?, wheres the oil coming from? I figure out that the PCV valve was shot. No oil in the IM, just at the ports of the head. Plus my catch can was full. So I figured to check over the turbo, and it was shot. The shaft had about 1/4'' total play in it. No oil tho.
So what started out as just gettin another mitsu turbo and make my own PCV system, turned into this list.
-Garrett 2871RS turbo
-Custom 3'' turbo back SS exhaust
-Perrin FMIC
-Custom aluminum intake piping (perrin is for MSP, mine not)
-DEI Cryo system (fuel bar, 16x9 IC ring, 2.5'' intake bulb)
-Zex 200shot direct port wet system
-Zex traction control switch
-Zex TPS activation switch
-Zex purge on 8x4 IC ring
-Greddy Profec E-01 EBC
-J&S Safegaurd
-Russell fuel dist. block
-AEM fpr
-MBX FPR fuel rail adaptor
-Extrude Honed 626 manifold
-OEM upgraded alternator
-Custom CF triple gauge pod where passenger airbag is
-Autometer sport-comp digtal tach/shift light gauge, Cylinder head temp, tranny temp
-Tilton tanny pump with DEI 24x2 cooler core
-2 Spal 12'' slim fans with custom aluminum mounting bracket
-new nology wires (msp style)
-Aeroqiup hoses and fittings for n2O, fuel, and cryo
-PCV system
-Vibrant couplings and t-bolt clamps
- MAYBE Autopower roll cage
Just waiting on the Aeroquip stuff from Summit, and the Vibrant stuff from MOSI. Gave my manifold to my buddy and he's gonna put the new flange on for the turbo, and port it. The IM is all done and I have got the Zex 3/16'' ss hard lines done. They turned out like:eek: Made my passenger airbag cover into my new triple pod, and got that sent out to CrazyCaker for a CF wrap. J&S is installed, by far the easiest thing to install something that can save your engine. Perrin FMIC is on, lots of cutting and piping rework. All of the wiring/hoses for gauges and other systems are pulled though the firewall.
Still lots to do, but waiting on the manifold cause I need that so I can finish the exhaust and intake piping.
More posts to come......

Well another week or so has gone by and I got the n2O and fuel soleniods mounted, along with the AEM frp. All of my Aeroquip lines and fittings came in. Finally got around to remounting my oil filter and hooked that back up to the cooler.
Biggest thing was that I made up an aluminum bracket for the fans. I decided against using the steel mounting pins cause i think they would have lead to problems down the road. The fans sit only 1/4'' away from the rad and they look like they are just floating there, can't really see the frame.
Broke 3 Snap ring pilers clocking the turbo into the place it needs to be:p , but still no manifold yet. My buddy is going to get kicked in the balls if he doesn't get it done. Fitted up my 3'' short radius 90 on to my downpipe flange.
Finished the wiring and mounting of the Greddy Profec E-01.
Still waiting for a few things that are in the mail, but things seem to be coming along. Hoppefully it wont be like last years build so I can make it up to some meets.

I will be posting some pics tomorrow of the car. I just have to figure out why my camera wont turn on.
Also I have to figure out how to set the wastegate rod up. I'm guessing without the turbo even on the car the wastegate should be held shut by the actuator? I still have to look this up as I made a bracket for the actuator but want to make sure the rest postion of the WG.
yellowmsp03.5
February 27th, 2008, 03:26 PM
you got the GT28 right?? with internal wastegate? the flapper wont stick shut until mounted.. like it is floppy off the car..
when you mount the wastegate it should hold it shut yes... wastegate is always shut until you build boost and the PSI opens the flapper..
know what im saying homeslice

I dunno, your car probably weighs 500- 600 Lbs more, Any show for sure.. I wont get points for stereo, or Fab LED/Neon Underglow, Paint, Interior....
I never said that the car was shit, just "Full". You have so many bells and whistles in that car that it's actually overwhelming to me, even in pictures..
I like the fact that you did it and are happy. Nothing negative was intended.

Ok maybe 200-300 lbs more:rolleyes: (i think stock the P5 is 130lbs more then the sedan?), but I still have more power.
I thought by the BOLD usage of SHIT, you were implying it as a inslut.
And yes, I don't think I can can fit anymore shit, its full.:p

I think if we lined both of your cars up together they we be equally as amazing, just in completely opposite areas.
I mean kz9 has rediculous amounts of power and has an amzing show car.
On the other hand mp5t your car is rediculously functional autoX wise and is probably one of the cleanest looking cars ever! Especially since the new project you've jsut posted.
Both gorgeous cars just complete polar opposites!

I agree that his car is awesome, I can appreciate the work as I have first hand knowlege of an undertaking like this.. My next target is upwards of 350Whp with a requirement for full spool as low as possible.. Tires will not last long, and other parts will break and be fixed.. It's the nature of the hoby...

Well its been a bit and tomorrow I will be turning her over. I still have to wait for 2 custom Nology wires to show up before I can drive her, and also the fact that I have to put the bumper and, headlights, etc, back in.
I am going to post some pics up of what it looks like now, don't mind the hoses as I am not too sure about all the mess.
I still have to prime the oil system and check for fuel leaks and such in the new lines, and also program the new electronics.
Tell me what you think of the mess and wish me luck!

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!
Well today I turned her over. Seemed to have a little bit of trouble starting at first, but with everytime (from cold) it got quicker with less cranking.
And with any major mods I do, there always seems to be some problems. Nothing major yet.
Heres the list so far :p
- I plumbed the AEM fuel pressure reg backwards :p ( read instructions ) FIXED
- Gauge lights don't work ( needed new relay )
- Forgot to install EGT in bung :p ( might be messing up my WB )
- Nology sent me the wrong wires, the boots are too long so they stick off of the valve cover, but they work

Ok, so I have ran into my first brain teaser.
Coil #1 (cyl 2-3) on crank is not firing, but when I let off the key after cranking it fires once. This is obvoisly my starting problem.
I did rework the coil harnesses so I possibly crossed a wire. I have to do some continutiy test is see if they are wired right.
Anyone else ran into this when a coil goes bad? I have never seen this before and my mechanic buddy said he has never heard it firing after releasing the key.

Ok both coils don't spark durning cranking. They only spark when I stop, and only once?
Wiring is fine.
Might be the J&S
edit: It is the J&S

Well had her out today driving around and tuning. Everything is fine, start right up, idles perfect, and pulls like at mofo!!! And thats just at 10psi (lowest i can go). I still have lots of tuning to do, so I might book some dyno time.
I still have to test out the tranny pump, and a couple other circuits, as well as setting up gagets. Theres a couple of accessory issues, like underglows, etc.
All in all I am happy with how it turned out. My intake temps seem to be higher (10 degree), but I think its fine. Cause I never drove my car in the summer for the last 2 years:p Only in the spring, fall, and even Winter to Joe's place. So I think its just the higher temps outside.
