What's the stock exhaust I.D. for a g2 1.8?? I want to take out my resonator and just replace it with a pipe.
For those that might have done this, will it make my exhaust sound better, even if only slightly??

Better is a relative term.... If by better you mean sounding like the General Lee, by all means remove your resonator. YEE HAW!!
You should have attended the Brullen meet there was a great info session conducted by 'the man' himself - Richard.
For what reason are you planning on removing the res?
More Power? Truth - you will not gain anything.
Better Sound? Truth - just a whole lot louder plus you will have shockwaves of sound travelling back and forth through the exhaust system that will make it really boomy. Especially during downshifts and when you let off the gas.
To be brutally honest - don't do it.

shit, is it really going to be that loud?? thats horrible, I didn'5t expect to gain much if anything in the way of power, but I figured at least a better sound might be nice. though, I'd like it to not sound like my exhaust is about to fall off.
what a pisser, I was really looking forward to doing it.

If you want the performance sound then just spend a few bucks extra and get a Ractive muffler welded to the pipe. Some members in the club have gone this route and they get the sound and the looks! I think Ractive Mufflers will run you only $150 tops (incl install).

question.. i've been looking for a muffler but i can't seem to know where to go to find one.. that bill fifty deal for a ractive doesn't sound like a bad investment.. but i really want an axle-back.. any suggestions?

Hmmmm.... ractive muffler, eh? Can whoever has it or has yeard/seen it let me know what it's like? I'm just looking for a deeper, meaner growl, but not a lot louder. Just bassier.
Thx
-oh yeah, anyone got pics of the ractive muffler?

I have a Ractive Axle-Back "Fireball" muffler on my P5.
Here is the link to some pics.
It is a bit boomy. But for the most part I LOVE IT!!!
Could use another resonator or smaller pipe or something to tone it down a bit. (At least for me.)

In the $150 - $200 range you can look at Ractive but Vibrant makes an axle-back as well. Vibrant ain't all that bad either. The look is pretty low key but the build quality looked good and the tip is rolled but not huge.

Sorry... Peformance improvements has them in stock but don't get it there cause they rip you off unless it's on sale.
If you are in the WESTSIDE I seriously insist that you goto Zoro Muffler on Dundas between Dixie and Cawthra ( South side just west of the Canadian Tire).

I still never got an answer about the I.D. of the stock exhaust.
Not that I don't value anyone's opinion I really do, most of you guys are way more experienced with doing mods to your pro's, but I've decided to try it anyways, maybe for a couple days, and if its really that loud then I'll bite the bullet and put the resonator back in. I've got nothing against working on my car actually I look for excuses to do stuff to it, I think I've cleaned my throttle body 8 times or so since August.

Have you tried the Protege FAQ (http://web2.iadfw.net/emann/protegefaq/) ?
The diameter will be metric .. so like 50 mm or whatever.

I didn't until you suggested it to me, but didn't find it in there.
I read a few interesting things though, and found out that my official colour is not midnight blue. Boy is my face red.
Maybe I should change my login name to VividBlueMica97lx or BlueVioletMica97lx

well i took your ::MP5Navy:: advice and i went to ZORO Muffler..
i was told that he would make a custom axle-back with any muffler of my choice for $350.. that doesn't sound like a bad deal.. cuz i also checked out performance improvements and they were offering me a vibrant axle-back for $360.. not installed!
but the weird thing is i'm confused as to which one is made better.. i really don't know what to look for in a muffler as in the welding job and types of material used...etc?!? all i know is that mandrel bending is better than compression.. but thas as far as my knowledge goes (thanks to the brullen guy richard for that knowledge) http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif
so yeah.. help please!?!

one other question..
i've been shopping around for prices on an axle-back muffler and these are the quotes i've been getting so far:
zoro muffler - $350 (magnaflow)
performance improvements - $360 (vibrant)
thruway - $320 (ractive)
i would just like to know what everyone thinks of all this?!
any suggestions?
which one should i go with?!
oh.. i don't know about brullen's prices.. i'd love to get one of those.. anyone have an idea on a brullen axle-back?
thanks again!

i have a magnaflow and if you are looking for a really deep sound that's what you'll get. As for the others I know the ractive is very subtle and I havn't heard the Vibrant.

Just a few weeks ago I picked up a Euro-style black Vibrant muffler. It sounds great; enough to be noticed as a performance addition, but not too low and droning in regular traffic pace use.
But like most performance mufflers, i guess there would be that noticable hummm at 110-120km/hr at 3300rpm and up.
Because my muffler was not a bolt-on application I went to AMARZ muffler shop at Dixie& 401 and had him custom make a bolt on sleeve for $180.00.
The Vibrant company located in Mississauga has an on-line adobe catalogue of which to scan their products. They even have a section on how their mufflers look inside.

In the end you will decide what is better for you whether it is price, selection, style, guarantee, sound and your gut feeling to which to purchase. My selling point was the represented I met in person who did not cut up any other products but weighed my needs, desires and budget. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

Hey Ryan. If your interested in removing your resonator I say try it. I got a Brullen cat back and later went back to have my resonator removed. Richard warned me but I insisted on trying it without. Ive had it out for about 8 months now and its not that bad. Actually it sounds fricken cool. A few of us took my car to Mt. Tremblent (Montreall) this winter to go snowboarding. 6 Hours of driving. Nobody complained.
When I downshift theres a subtle yet badassed rumble that will barely cach your ear and make you smile.
However if you dont have a performance exhaust you might not even notice it which was the case with a VW I had. But I cant really say cause that thing had a totally different style of resonator.

thanks everyone for the input.. much appreciated!
i'm gonna go around to more muffler shops and shop around for prices..
my budget is $400 so i dunno bout the resonator deal.. by the way you described it.. it seems like music to your ears.. i'd love to try that out someday but i gotta save some money first in order to do such a thing.. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
thanks again everyone!

I JUST removed mine today, finished about half hour ago. haven't started it up yet. It would have taken less time but I experienced, to sugar coat it, technical difficulties. I don't have a p5 though.

well about the resonator.. is it a bolt-on pipping or did they jus cut off the resonator and jus welded a stainless steel pipe?! cuz i'm kinda hesitant to taking it out and not being able to put it back on if its way too loud for me! but i'm willing to try it out though!

MP5rYda...if you go to Brullen...those guys will pretty much do anything you want. Just tell them you wan to try a straight pipe out and if you don't like it you want the resonator put back on. I am sure they will cut the reonator off bolt on the new straight pipe, and if you want the resonator put back on, they can just put sleeves on it and bolt it back on, or weld it, whatever you prefer.
Regardless, if you cannot do this yourself, and live anywhere close to brullen, I suggest you go there...they are bad ass and know their shit!

I went to Canadian Tire, Got a tail pipe cutter, and expander, cut my old one off, and jammed a piece of straight pipe in it. and Clamped it down. Mine was welded to the pipe, or rather part of a longer pipe that ran from the cat all the way to the axle. As I recall.
