This is a step-by-step instructional to make your plain old bumper lenses blink when you signal.  This is the correct way to make your bumper lenses come on when you have your parking/head lights on and blink when you signal.

Approximate time for mod: 2 hours.

Materials you will need:
(All materials can be bought at Canadian Tire)
Self-tapping splice connectors (I used 4)
12 ft of 20 gauge speaker wire.
Side cutters, wire stripper, pliers, cable ties.
Electrical tape
4 metres of small diameter wire looming.
Tail light converter (3 into 2 wire converter) (~$26)
Total cost of materials: $40.

Here we go:

1.  Find a suitable place to mount the tail light converter box.  I found that using the two-sided tape to adhere it to the front of the battery cover was ideal (just incase I needed to repair it) – however, you may choose a more stealth location.  Once you decide on a place temporarily mount it – just in case you want to move it during installation.

2.  On the "car side' of the converter box you will see 4 wires.  You will only be using 3 of them so you can cut off the wire that is labeled 'tail light'.  On the “tail light” side of the converter there are three wires.  You will only be using 2 of them so you can cut off the wire labeled ‘tail light’.

3.  Remove your bumper lenses (As posted HERE (http://msg.toprotege.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=144) ) and pull the sockets out as far as possible to make the work to be done easier.  (Now might be a good time to do the clear bumper lens conversion to and try to be as cool as me).

4.  Looking at the front turn signal plugs you must now isolate which of the three wires is the turn signal trigger wire.  I used a voltmeter – you can just trust my words.  The turn signal trigger wire is the wire that is closer to the driver side of the car.  In the case of the drivers side turn signal the wire is green w/ black stripe and white hash marks (however, both wires into this side are the same colour so just isolate the wire closer to the driver’s side of the car).  The wire on the right front turn signal is coloured green w/white stripe and white hash marks).

5.  Extend the wires on the converter box for the right and left signals on the “car side”.  Using the self-tapping splice connectors connect the wires from the Converter to the appropriate turn signal trigger wires.  (If you place the converter box on the battery run the speaker wire in it’s unsplit condition across the underside of the reinforcing member in front of the rad and leave 4 feet beyond the passenger side of the car.)  By leaving the speaker wire unsplit you will have the ability to connect the passenger side bumper lens and the right turn signal without running other wires across the car.

6.  You should now have tapped the “car side’ of the converter into the turn signals.  Now it’s time to connect the passenger side bumper lens.  Look at the wires that lead to the bumper lens.  One is black and the other is green.  Cut the green wire leaving enough wire (4 inches) on the socket side to make your connection to the wire coming from the converter.  Pass the wire that runs from the “tail light side” of the converter box labeled ‘right turn/brake signal’ to the bumper lens and wire it up to the socket.  Electrical tape both the connection and also the side that is now free on the original connection.

7.  Now the passenger side is complete and no other connections are necessary.  Time to finish the driver’s side of things.  Run the wire labeled ‘brake’ on the “car side” of the converter and also the wire labeled ‘left/brake signal’ on the “tail light” side of the converter to the driver’s side bumper lens.

8.  As in step 6 wire the bumper lens to the ‘left/brake signal’ wire.  However, on driver’s side you must also wire up the ‘brake’ wire to the original wire that ran to the bumper lens.  Electrical tape all connections (duh).

9.  You are now have completed all the necessary connections.  Do a test.  Make a left turn signal and a right and check to see that the bumper lenses are blinking accordingly.  When the headlights are off the bumper lens and the turn signal will blink in the same phase.  Turn on your headlights. Your bumper lenses and front turn signals should come on as usual.  Make a left and right turn signal and check bumper lenses again.  They should blink accordingly, however, they will blink out of phase with the front turn signals – this is normal – no need to worry.  If things are not working properly – you suck and need to employ the assistance of a WESTSIDE member – just PM us.

10.  If everything checked out you now just need to complete the finishing touches on the install.  Use zip ties to secure the wires that run under the reinforcing member in front of the rad.  Use the wire looming to cover all the exposed wire (both for aesthetics and for protection).  Also electrical tape the self-tapping splice connectors to prevent moisture damage.  Remove the backing off the two sided tape on the back of the converter box and mount it to a clean surface.  Replace the bumper lenses.

11.  Drive around and impress yourself by signaling at every chance you get.  You will be mesmerized by the pulsation of your bumper lenses reflecting off concrete dividers on the highway and in the mirrored facades of buildings.  Girls love this mod and will be more likely to jump on your ‘chubby’ – just remember that you’re scoring due to a mod made courtesy of the WESTSIDE.

that looks so complicated!!!

1. I'll I did was use one relay on each side.
2. Ground pin 86
3. Tap into the signal wire on that side (green/white) at pin 85
4. run pins 30 and 87a to the bumper marker
5. did not use pin 87
6. cut green/black wire at bumper signal (about three inches out), hook 30 up to one side and 87a up to the other (doesn't matter which way it goes)

works like a simply interupt circuit. Only works when the signal is going and the parking lights are on. All it does is disconnect the side marker every time the front signal goes. :)
