I would like a slightly larger steering wheel for my P5, are there any alternatives, especially with all that cruisecontrol hardware?

What size are the old 4-spoke style steering wheels?
The cruise control buttons just kinda slot into the side of the normal wheel so you could probably rig them up to anything you wanted.

Do you care about still having an airbag?

The wheel that is in the WRX is pretty big and has an airbag (MOMO OEM part I think).

Im not sure but I think taking out the airbag is as illegal as taking out the drivers side seat belt. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

It's completely legal to take out your air bags.
But dealerships cannot do it, you have to do it yourself
(in ours it's as simple as a couple screws and one plug).

The only thing illegal is to say that a car does have airbags when it doesn't.

Oh. In that case I might look into an aftermarket steering wheel as well. A wheel made my VW feel really good.

In that case I should sell mine, I could use the ca$h

Yeah i'd really like a new wheel as well. The plastic just doesn't feel nice after a long period of driving..
Of course, Sparco is my first choice (there are also a few cool but super-expensive Mazdaspeed wheels you can get through Corksport).. but the Tekniq system looks kinda cool to me http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

And if you get the package it's not that bad of a deal..

azn_rascal has a Momo wheel on his protege .. there are a couple little modifications you have to make to get it on but nothing serious.

From what I could find out before, our wheels may be the same as the 99 Miata so if there is an adapter kit for that, then we could use it. I have a couple links of install instructions for a Momo wheel into a Miata but not at hand this moment.

Yeah Rowan, the Miata hub adapter should work on the P5's and G3's. I used it for my Momo but requires some mods to be right on center.

I'd like something that doesn't take rocket-science to install. What's done with all that cruisecontrol crap? I'm surprised as I find just another inch in diameter would be a real boost in autocross.

Bigger would be better?
I was thinking it would be the other way around being that if the wheel was smaller, you wouldn't have to turn it as much for the same effect.

Larger gives you "twitch" control. You can learn to "throw" your car (something I was trying on Saturday) and still have it forgiving you when you overshoot, or understeer into and out of a corner.

Coming into a corner, you can snap the wheel (considering you're on an adreniline rush... you can't make properly calculated corrections so you need some "slop")... get the back end slightly loose, and then let the car and wheel follow itself through the corner without losing speed or scrubbing off the tires.

If you recall, I'm also on stock tires with 360 kms on them and so they should be closer to bath sponges than autocross rubbers. You also have another tool that no one touches anymore... THE DREADED HANDBRAKE! That peice of hardware can give you some crazy Sh#t (up at the top of the lot near the Centre, I touched the handbrake to loosen the backs and cause the car to drag itself around the sweeping curve).

MMmmmmm, you are willing to learn yes Master Luke, driving old of legends?!?!?! >http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
