View Full Version : Old trick with a new car

For those of you with short ram intakes and a nees for speed at slaloms and autocross, I'm designing a box that will further increase intake and smooth the torque curve. This is an old trick from my rally days in the early 1970's that balanced out torquey motors. Its drawbacks are the need to remove the air filter, but that is why you run it for short periods. Once I've got mine designed and built I'll post the design so you can give it a try.

Another trick I learned a few years ago that actually works without cost is punching holes underneath the airbox for more air. Very popular a few years ago when cold air intake systems were non-existent.. If you need more oomph, just drop a K&N in conjunction with your newly modded airbox. Worked for a lot of us back then... Maybe Pawood and I should hang out more just chit-chatting about the good old days... http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My dad is/was an old-school backyard mechanic (V-8 RWD type) and he used to do all but the most major work on our cars, and he once told me about, how on our old Buick he "gutted" the air cleaner. What he did was, cut out the sheet metal in the air cleaner the one that is directly in front, or (behind depending on how you look at it) of where the inake spout is, so that the air went directly into the filter, rather than being directed around it. And then he cut out the sheet metal that was on the inside of the filter, around the carburetor throat so that the air went straight in through the filter and down rather than being directed up and then sucked down. I like talking to him and my uncle because some of these old car guys have some cool stories and old hotrodding tricks that if modified slightly will work on our cars.

What is an expansion box??

An expansion box is a bit of simple engineering where you build a venturi (a shape like the average playboy model) which actually accelerates air to the intake without any active requirement such as fans and such. The beauty of the system is that it rams more air into the system the faster you drive when you need it most, because a vacuum at speeds above 60 kph is usually created under the hood of a car which starves off air that your engine needs.
Depending on the filter you use... in some cases if any... you notice the difference in passing and other activities where acceleration above 50 kph are required.

I'm convinced that there's not much point in spending a lot modifying the wife's '03 sportmode auto trans car, given the really soft launch in first gear, and the really tall gearing in second and third (175kph at redline). Still, I disconnected the intake snorkel at the filterbox, and replaced it with what I'll call a velocity intake, 5 1/2" wide leading into a 2 5/8" tube, which fits over the male unit on the filterbox. The total length is 3". It draws air from under the hood, obviously, but is direct, and sounds nice, too.
I tried to post a photo a while back, but was unsuccessful. Any thoughts on this modification?
Thanks

odd that the car is so low at redline although there is another gear the car is drag limited and can go over 230kmh
