Finally got my oil block adapter brought up to me from Chicago. This thing looks great, and comes with 2 different sized fittings (different lengths). I'd recommend it if you plan on installing an oil pressure sensor, turbo oil lines, etc.

They are extremely hard to find, not many were made. I did see one not to long ago for sale on the US forums.

I've read some pretty nasty reviews of the OBX manifolds on the US board. Granted, they're not exactly known to be a wealth of RELIABLE information. But I tend to believe those stories. Bad fitment was among the top complaints, as well as cracking problems.
CrazyCaker
October 26th, 2006, 07:58 AM
^ cracking is the huge one, but I find a lot of stupid ppl expecting the mani to hold all the weight of the turbo by itself. A bracket to help support some of the weight would work wonders in many cases.
tekkie
October 26th, 2006, 10:43 AM
the thing is just using way to thin metal, if they beefed it up it would work so much better
but yeah if the turbo was supported it would probably work alot better

I started working on my tranny last night, and ran into a few problems. First, I couldn't get the ball joint clamp bolt out since the bolt seems to be seized. I ended up disconnecting the tie-rod instead, and the strut from the hub. The shaft came out considerably easy from the tranny. My next problem was the shift linkage bolt! That bitch was so seized I had to end up using a punch on my air hammer to get the ***ker out!!
I'm just about to start working on it again this morning, I'm hoping the rest goes a bit smoother.
edit: btw, if you don't have air tools... don't bother attempting any work on the tranny!

Haha I wish you luck! Some of the 19mm and 17mm bolts were bitches even with the impact. An air rachet helps a ton too, not to much an air hammer for those special occassions :p
I managed to get the lsd in the tranny, and the new flywheel and clutch are on. I just have to put the tranny back on bolt everything back up. I'm having a problem getting the 2 side bolts back in to the tranny housing though, seems they are not catching on the inside  I gave up for today because I had to watch my son at 3pm. I'm sure it's something trivial though.

Yeah that's what their for, but I'm confused how you managed to put a screw driver though the holes and reassemble the casing? How can the case slid on while the screw drivers are there? That doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something here?

The key is to line up the holes as close as possible to were they go. Then use a punch to move the bracket. I don't know why you are having so much trouble? They should not move that much when u put the housing on.
The bolt on the left screws in to that holder, but the one on the right IIRC does not screw into anything? It just goes into the middle of that clamp and helps keep it aligned?

It's probably because I was trying to rush everything. So far I've only spent 5-6 hrs working on everything, I figured I was doing pretty good :p
I'm going to burn one (maybe a few actually), and try to get everything back in this afternoon. I think the problem was that my "stuff" was starting to wear off by that point yesterday. ;)

Did you guys change the races for the diff bearings? I looked at them and realized they seemed to be pressed in so I said ***k it. This is likely the cause of that bearing noise some ppl describe as tranny whine after they swap the diff.
kz9
November 6th, 2006, 01:13 PM
I did not change mine cause they were fine. Just look to see if they are nice and smooth.
Yeah, don't forget to keep topped up on that stuff, I works wonders. :p
And don't rush. I'm sure you'll get it.
Can't wait to see it done.
CrazyCaker
November 6th, 2006, 07:13 PM
Well, just as I thought it was something trivial (and obviously not enough "stuff" :p ). I had to fool around and get it to shift so that the clip thing would move up into position, and the other bracket thing that's threaded for the side bolt had to be aligned up properly.
Everything is back together now, but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet as I still got more things to do while the car is off the road.

***king damn tranny!! I think I over torqued the damn locking nuts as I can't shift into 5th and reverse now. No more tranny work after I finish with this pos. Although getting the tranny back on was pretty simple compared to what some make it out to be. I didn't even have troubles with the driveshaft clearing the oil seal. I'm going to just crack open the top again while it's still on and replace the lock nuts, hopefully this will do the trick.

yeah I realize it's binding, I'm not pleased to say the least. I'm 99% sure I know what the problem is, and it involves shifting the forks/gears into the proper position, so in other words I have to open the mother***ker up again.

I just talked to Steve (NSN) and he feels that it's just over toqueing of the lock nuts. This causes emense pressure on the sychros and other stuff underneath even though it may not appear to be. He went on to explain this could also cause the problem with neutral as well because it is not disengaging properly. I'm hoping he's right, and it was my first thought as well.

The problem w/ 5th and reverse was a cracked sychro, likely due to me over tightening the lock nuts. Problem solved.

Today I got around to installing my oil/tranny cooler, two 12" FAL slim fans, FMIC, and some of the piping. I ended up fitting my oil/tranny cooler between the rad and a/c condenser, there's a lot of room between there. The reason I couldn't mount it in the front was not due to fitment, but because I had to move the cooling loop to behind the latch support bracket in order to push my FMIC all the way back so that the bumper would fit back on without modification.
Pics later.

Got the mani and other stuff on, and as expected it only took a few mins. Just need to get three 2.5" -> 3" couplers, fittings for the oil feed and return, fittings for the vaccum block, and drill and tap the crank support plate for the oil return!
I also ended up wiring some additional aux inputs/outputs to the MicroTech to allow it to data log my WB and make adjustments for when the A/C and other loads on the alternator are present. I'm also going to wiring up the VICS control to it as well so that I can adjust when it kicks in or disable/enable it completely whenever I feel like it.
More pics coming soon.

I now have everything I needed and once I finish changing the tranny oil, engine oil, coolant, spark plugs, and a few other maintance things I'll be ready to fire it up and drive it over to an exhaust shop to get a new midpipe flange to proper mate up with my downpipe. I'll try to update this tonight with some pics.
Yesterday I bought an oil catch can for the line going from the valve cover to the intake. This is definitely required for turbo'd vehicles! The amount of blow-by oil in that line is pretty considerable when a turbo is added. I ended up drilling a hole in the rubber neck of my intake filter for the temp sensor instead of just tucking it somewhere or letting it hang.

^^ very true about the catch can. I added one a couple of weeks ago, its getting a fair bit of oil in it. I'm going to add another check valve (PCV valve) on the line leading to the intake manifold because I don't like the idea of the catch can being pressurized under boost too.

I've got that one already, but its on the line that leads from the valve cover to the catch can, which stops the top of the crank case from being pressurized under boost. But the catch can is still pressurized from the line running to the intake manifold, so that's where I'd like to add another check valve.

Ok you mean the line running from the catch can to the intake pipe right? You can simply add a check valve (small white one) to stop that. I have one already, I'll get you the part # once I'm home.

There's a problem with using a catch can as a coolant overflow which I just realized.... The drain has to be at the bottom of the catch can, whereas most of the cans on the market are not like that.

I couldn't have asked for better from them, and the price was extremely reasonable. I had them modify my midpipe by shortening it, replacing the flange to a 3 bolt to mate up with my downpipe, add two o2 bungs into my downpipe, and modify my wastegate dump tube and weld it into the downpipe. Total out the door $285. :) I was very impressed by the job especially on the downpipe (wastegate and o2 bungs) seeing as it was ceramic coated. The guy that did the work told me he carefully grinded off the coating in the areas where he had to weld, the result is picture perfect! The guy who did the work was a younger guy (he did have a slight pony tail, but there was also an older guy with a long pony tail who didn't touch my car :p ), but I would definitely let this guy do more work on my car... in fact he'll be modifying my EGR for me to make it work (more or less lol).

As for the Oil temp 250!!! Holy crap! I be plumbin the cooler in for sure soon. I took Tekkie's advice and zip tied all my vac lines and nothin popon off yet. Are u using a LC-1 from Inovate for ur wideband? If so, invest $300 and get the LMA-3 datalogger. I have it and it is great! Makes tunning a snap. (unless u can datalog on the Microtech?)
It has a G-force sensor also which can be used like a Dyno. If the G's go up more power.
What about EGT's? I'm gettin like 1300 at WOT. And cursin around town its at about 800. Also my heat wrap is havin an affect on the temp readin.
AFR's I found that 11.5 is makin a good deal of power and keepin it safe, from detonation at WOT. and 12.2 at POT.
CrazyCaker
May 25th, 2007, 02:28 PM
I have an AEM wideband. The MicroTech does also have datalogging, so I don't need anything else.
My EGTs are basically the same as yours, but I haven't run much at WOT yet due to not having any tuning done yet. I have just been doing a few short FUN bursts of boost here and there for now.
I tried zip tying the vac lines, but I find they don't get tight enough. The extra small hose clamps work perfectly though.

To anyone thinking of getting an ems, I can not recommdend the MicroTech high enough! It is fanastic!! New prob now. Fans are not turning on. I think it has something to do with the settings on the MicroTech, but I will be changing the thermostat anyways since it has never been done before.
Other then that, I adjusted the fuel maps and now I'm running a lil better (still trying to get use to the MT software), only hitting 10.2-15.4 now which is a lot better then the 17s I was touching before.
Even with the bad tune this thing pulls like a monster! :D Those who visited on the weekend can attest to that ;) Scott and I were talking about making a vid (*Of our cars!) next time he drops by for a visit, so hopefully we can make that happen soon.

ya your car is running good and pullin hard. good job buddy it all looked good under the hood.
btw my fan isn't turning either... and it is wired perfectly i have checked many times... my car isn't over heating but my fan isn't turning. my acces fan is coming on and going off (wasn't before) but the main fan still won't spin
CrazyCaker
May 28th, 2007, 03:14 PM
^ That's weird. I just thought of checking the fuses as well, maybe the FAL fans are drawing more amps? I could have sworn they were coming on before because I checked to make sure they were wired up in puller mode to make sure.

I have it at 97° or 99° right now I believe. I pretty sure I can turn it always on, I was going to do that today after work but I still want to make it work "properly".

Celsius? If so I wouldn't necessarily expect them to be coming on that often.. when I'm running I'm normally running between 180-190F and only going up to 210F after a long hard run and come to a stop do the temps rise to 210 which is roughly 99C.

May 29th, 2007, 07:46 AM
^ Yes that's in celsius. I noticed last night that the driver's side fan was coming on (it wasn't before). The passenger side is the AC fan, but I think I'm going to wire it to come on as well to give that lil extra help.

I've been driving around with my laptop on so I can keep an eye on EXACTLY what the coolant temp is for now.

I just ordered a new oil filter sandwich plate so that I can get my oil cooler plumbing hooked up. Now I need to order an inline pump for my tranny cooler lines.
yellowmsp03.5
May 31st, 2007, 10:54 AM
ya but what i was planning on saying next was that if you dont have over a certain level of fluid in your coolant system then your fan meter will not be completely submerged like it has to be and the fans will not turn on... you need to be like around 3/4 full on the pros to keep the meter submerged.
i found this when my fan wasn't turning on... or it would for a bit then i would shut my car off and it would boil, then the next time id run the fan wouldnt turn on again until i added more water
so this might be your problem too
