being a new Protege 5 owner and this being my first Japanese car (had a vr6 jetta previously), I was just wondering what grade gas I should be using in my car. THANKS!

Depend's on how long you want to keep your car.
i put it in gold, i get better milage, and more power, with shelf. even better with sunco sometime, too expensive. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
but if you are thinking trade in after 3 years, then it is don't matter.
just my view.

This has been discussed before but good point about how long you plan to keep the car.
I always treat my car with respect, like my body I suppose, so when I found out Sunoco has the best/cleanest gas, it's the only place I go. Of course since GTO is owned by Sunoco, I frequent them too.
This car has only seen regular, and I don't plan to use premium with these prices, but I will NEVER go to Esso, since their gas is loaded with sulphur and the fart smell is out!
Protect the environment and stay away from ESSO - free points or whatever they offer aren't worth it!

I usually have a couple burittos and chilli fries the gas after that is especially great. Curry chicken works too,, ooooch... that one stings the eyes.
Hahaha... sorry could not resist a little immature humour.
Damn, you swithced from VR6 jetta to protege... have you kicked the gas pedal through the floor yet? VR6 carries 200 deutsch horses does it not?
That is one of my considerations for a more powerful car. I like the GLi.....
ooops better be careful... don't want to get excluded from the protege clan....

Sunoco all the way. As for grade, in the winter my car is on a strict diet of Ultra 94, in the summer its normally regular with the occasional "treat" of the premium with ethanol (Ultra 94).
My opinions:
Petro - My old protege ran like shit whenever I used their premium. Regular was OK so it goes on the emergency list.
Shell - Tried Optimax once on the way to cottage. Got great mileage (700 or so) however I feel like I am betraying my Sunoco loyalty. Besides, I don't like their pumps. (another emergency or no Sunoco candidate)
Esso - My buddy used to work at an Esso, and we had a card that we swiped whenever there was a customer that didnt have one. I got five bucks in free gas from Esso. That was also the last time their nozzle will ever penetrate my car's filler tube.
Goco, Pioneer, and other independants: Whenever I see these stations I feel the urge to slap a downshift on their ass. Steer clear of these.

Sunoco is the cleanest gas as per the government/media study ( and they use to own petro).
regular should be used as that is what the car is tuned for. If you want to use premium all the time then get it tuned for that .... advance the timing a bit.
It will not make the car last any longer by which grade you use.
Also, Shell's gas is sluggish .... Esso gives a bit more pep ... petro is crap , and the independ... don't trust all of them .... (these things are more noticable in a turbo car)
but i tend to stick to sunoco

Guys, I put in bronze. Not just because it's the cheapest, but because my b'f used to put Gold in his car when he bought it.. (a domestic, Chevy Malibu) and then found out from Chevrolet, that putting Gold into a car, that was made to run off Bronze will not do anything to prolong the life of your car. Infact, it will run better on Bronze, because that was the grade it was designed for. So, he started using bronze.. why waste his money? As far as I'm concerned, my P5 is not classified as a luxury car, therefore, I don't believe it suggests it runs off of anything more than Bronze. However, if Mazda tells me differently, then I may change the gas grade.
That's my opinion...

Your owners manual should tell you what octane rating your car is set for. Most imports with 9.0, or higher, compression usually recommend mid-grade (89) or higher.

I use Shell Silver (89 octane) and occasionally i put in Optimax (91 octane).

Normal Protege is tuned for our "regular" gas.
MP3 is supposed to use "premium" (due to advanced timing of ecu), MSP is probably the same.
I'm not sure what octane cruisin' should be running .... http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif hahaha
Also, a point about Sunoco ... they are one of the sponsors of the Solo I series and are involved in grassroots motorsport in our province which is very nice of them.
Too bad there aren't more of their stations around...

Your post needs explanation please.
If you've read this thread so far, you will notice the consensus that Sunoco sells the best/cleanest gas and yet you don't like them (why?). This means cleaner burning for your car and less sulphur spewed into the air. ESSO is the absolute worst, and yet you don't mind ESSO.
I had a beef years ago with Sunoco due to a carwash employee telling me to back up in a car wash, which ripped off my power mirror. The owner of that station was a former cop, who tried to intimidate me. The day I was scheduled to take him to small claims court, we settled. I still didn't buy Sunoco gas for years after that. However, I've grown up since and realize that the cleanest gas is best for my car and the environment and I just don't patronize that particular station.
Free airmiles may be your motivator; mine is a cleaner burning car and better air quality.

Huh? Using higher octane than recommended will do nothing to extend the life of your engine/car. And there has been much discussion elsewhere that this probably will not increase performance or mileage either, and is just a waste of money. Higher octane gas than the engine is designed for may not burn completely... something about the molecular structure of the gas.
But I do agree that Sunoco has a reputation as the best/cleanest gas, and that is what I use..

I use Petro - I'm sure I've said this before - because they give out PetroPoints, which can be converted to PC Points, which can get me discounts on my groceries at Loblaws. (My banking with PC Financial also helps me get free groceries. - I've gotten about $20 from Petro, and over $200 from PC Financial)
Air Miles are all good, but I like my free foods.
But there's a new Sunoco on WinstonChurchill south of Eglinton, around the corner from my new house, which also has a touchless carwash, so they might be gettin some of my business when I move (3 months later than was originally planned damn builder and delays)

A piece of warnning, i have shell b4 with my p5, but after about 3 months, i found out the oil gauage doesn't reach to very full, and i heard news about how shell and electrical fuel tank sensor(what we have) they cann't go together, and so i stop using it, and the gauage went up again after fuel tanks. so i don't know is it just me or something else.

higher octane = harder to burn = dirtier engine if your car isn't tuned for it. run the cheapest gas possible that doesn't make your engine knock . hehe
shell gets my car wash dollars lately because they have touchless about 2 blocks away. and the normal human carwash by my work is closed now for renovations or something. but i try to avoid buying gas from them because of many stories of their gas additives playing havoc with car sensors.

Rowan,
You are correct with Shell Additive topic. There was a major issue with one of the car companies regarding this....I believe it is Chrysler. That is why I do not use Shell.
BTW, most of the small/no name 'Gas Stations' actually buy their gas from the big oil companies. There are only a hand full of the oil companies that have refineries

Story behind it is... I was in highschool (about 7 years ago or so), taking an English credit in summer, because I hated English, and would much rather spend a month and a half or so to get the credit, then an entire 5 months the following semester. So, I rode my bicycle to school in the summer sometimes, and one day my handlebars came lose while riding, about halfway there. I stopped at a Sunoco that had an automotive mechanic dept as well, and asked the guy to borrow a wrench so I could tighten the bolt myself. I guess seeing I was a girl and all, he would not let me use the tool, and told me I had to wait at least 1/2 an hour or so (quite rude on top of that), until he was finished doing what he was doing. I explained I knew how to use a wrench, and had done this before, the handlebars were only lose - if I could use his tool for 30 seconds.. but he wasn't hearing that. I did not have 1/2 an hour or more, or I'd be late for school.. so I just left, and had to ride the rest of the way to school, with my handlebars sideways, or whichever way they were turned, while trying to ride straight.
The caretaker at the school let me borrow a wrench (and did not even stand over me while I used it).
Ever since then, I said screw Sunoco.. And no, I have no intention of letting it go, and using even another Sunoco. They didn't want to lend me a wrench... they've lost my business for good. I don't care if it burns cleaner or whatever... a car is a car, and truly, can only last so long.. regardless of what you do. Yes, somethings prolong the life of your car, but I know I cannot do absolutely everything to prolong the life of my car, so not using Sunoco does not bother me in any way.
Plus.... in the end, I want airmiles. =).

Forget about your car for a minute. Do you plan to have kids some day? I don't, but I do have young neices, nephews, and I care enough about the environment to want to burn the cleanest gas. I also am an avid bicyclist so I'm not using my car in the nice weather for everything.
That story of the jerk mechanic is rough, but one day you will grow up like I did and get over your anger.
Think about what's best for your car and the air quality and forget about the grease monkey that pissed you off as a school girl. He would have behaved that way if he worked for ESSO or anyone else because he was a jerk period. Don't hold it against Sunoco and get on with it - be responsible for contributing to cleaner air quality.

LOL, if you really do care for the environment and want to have the cleanest emission, you should've got a hybrid or a prius instead of a p5. Hybrid cars are about 75% cleaner than an ultra low emission vehicle. Also, these cars give you twice the mileage. The only thing that's cleaner than a hybrid car is a zero emission vehicle, but I'm not sure if those are out on the market yet.

I can run 91 just fine, I generally run 94 though because it is only a cent or 2 more. Anything other han Sunnoco is really hard to do. I had done it a few times when I first got the car but it isn't that hard to figure out wen you have a 1/4 tank and fill it up so I go to Sunnoco all the time. Hey, no problem what gas you or anyone chooses, but her first post was very anti-Sunoco and I happen to support the clean gas they sell and figure we should all be environment conscious. You young people are the future of the world, so you are expected to make wise environmental choices. Sucks, but true. I'm at the tail end of the baby boomers but doing my best to help out where I can.
I'm not asking for a "gang up" here, her opinion against mine, but if you read my earlier post, you'll see that due to a bonehead teenager @ Sunoco years ago, I got an electric mirror ripped off my car. The station manager, a former cop, tried to intimidate me into letting it go, but I stuck to it and got my money.
So compare stories if you like.
She: as a teenager, didn't get a tool she asked for from a jerk Sunoco mechanic, left mad and never went back to Sunoco. Cost - $0 and a hurt ego.
Me: as an adult, got my car damaged from a Sunoco idiot's instructions, then treated like crap by the manager. Cost - $187.50 + court fees and a pissed ego.
I didn't support Sunoco for years but when I found out their gas was the best, I changed my outlook on the situation and just don't go back to that particular station. So you can admire me for holding my ground on that (LOL).
If I wanted a Prius, I wouldn't be on this board but thanks for the suggestion. As also previously stated, I ride my bicycle as much as I can in the summer - my 0% emission vehicle, unless you consider passing wind to be an emission. LOL
That's it. I just wanted an explanation of why she was so hateful of Sunoco and then I shared my own opinions and thoughts. You can't criticize me for that - this whole forum is about sharing.
Peace!

If Esso gas is good enough for my maxima, its good enough for your protege http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Regular is what you use for your protege. I used regular in my old protege for 220,000 kms and still motor was perfect.. TRANNY was a different story though..
I love esso, i don't care that it is dirty... nothing some fuel injector cleaner can't clear up...
Think about it
Collect esso points, free car wash!! yes
1 dollar = 1 esso point
1 dollar = 3 esso points (when using premium)
one tank for me is $50 = 150 points
2 tanks = 300 points = FREE REGULAR WASH!!
THis is reason enough for me to use ESSO..
BTW.. sunoco has high methanol content which my cause gas line freezing..
