hey there,

anyone know of a place where i can get tweets for the triangular space just below my a-pillar on the front door? does anyone make an aftermarket drop-in kit?

thanks,

AHHHHHHAhAHAH Why do you want to do that!!! Why put the tweets so high up and away from the woofers? Is everyone bent on getting the worst SQ as possible?! SQ is your friend don't bitch slap her. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

I thought tweeters are suppose to be mounted high for the best sound quality?

I was planning on doing something similiar...Either by the bottom of the pilar or drilled into the side panels...

Keep 'em close to the woofer for SQ. But if you really wanted them there wait a few months and dealers should have a part number as these should be standard on the 2003 models. They will fit in the backside of the mirror near the A-pillar

Tweeters should be mounted as close to the woofers as possible. The distance between your front speakers to your ears should ideally be the same to have the best "image" (mind you some decks compensate by adjusting the phase differences b/w the left and right speakers). This is one of the reasons why mounting the tweeters to the a-pillar is a bad idea. At that location the distance of the left (driver's side) tweeter is significantly closer to your ears than the right tweeter. Also note that humans are able to recognize and isolate sounds on a level plane (Stereo) but not vertically. In other words we can hear what is to the left of us and to the right of us very well but we can't isolate how high or how low a sound is orginating from. Therefore kick-panels were created. By putting the speakers so far into the front/side of the foot wells we minimize the difference between the ears and the left and right speakers. Furthermore since our ears recognize how to isolate higher frequencies (bass tends to be recognized as omnidirectional) you want your music to sound pure and not dissociated by having the tweeters high in the dash and the woofers low in the doors (this would distort the "image").

I could say more but what's the point... I figure you fools will mount the speakers wherever the hell you want no matter what I say. I pity the fool. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I was gonna mount my tweets on the pillars...Art of Noise told me it wasnt a great idea....in turn I therefor ended up mounting them in...oh how do I explain this....uhh, under the front windows on the doors near the dash...kinda where the handles are...cut a hole, put em in and run the wires through. Sounds excellent to me, although I think my 5 1/4's are going ....AGAIN! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

while I understand the in's and out's of firing tweets at your face, my problem is that almost NO highs reach my ears from the stock system. i need to upgrade slowly (as to keep under the wife radar), so a new head unit and tweets will be the first step.

the higher you go in the frequency range, the more directional sound becomes. hence not caring where subs are placed, but taking special care in placing mids/highs for correct imaging. with all due respect to you auto sound experts out there: the stock system fires highs right at your knees... last i checked I don't have ears down there. best place seems to be the a-pillars...

so my question has yet to be answered...

thanks,

Want a straight up answer?

Nakamichi 5002 amp
Boston Acoustics 6.5 Pros.

You are never gonna get anything with stock power. You need to go out and buy an amp! I had no idea that you were planning on running things off the deck (no matter how aftermarket!http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

I'll answer you question anyway audio rookie. Go to Future Shop (they sell cheap stuff there - I think you might appreciate it) since they have a good range of tweeters (for the ghetto system D.I.Y) and you have the ability return the tweets if you don't like it (but you have lowly tastes so I'm sure it'll be okay).

Many tweeters come with different mounts so you don't need to buy a special piece for the area you are talking about. You will not be able to flush mount the tweets but you can no doubt use the swivel mounts to complete the task. You can even utilize the swivel mounts to adjust the harsh, distorted high frequency waves directly into your ears (wife do a lot of yelling?). Plus they will look cool!

What's up with the "with all do respect" line? Don't give me that crap cause last time I checked we didn't have any dorks in the club. Hope I answered you question.

thanks, but I did read that... don't really want anything "stock" from Mazda, especially audio equipment. if their pricing is anything like what they charge for the MD module for the stock head unit ($850!!http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif it's not worth it.

thanks dude... however i did mention that i will be upgrading the head unit...

not an audio rookie either... last auto had a decent system installed, but left most of it behind in the trade-in. MB Quart tweets, PPI amp, Clarion head, Kicker subs, Rockford 6x8's and JBL 6.5's... i should have mentioned that before so as not to insult your superior itellect. like i mentioned before (yet you failed to read), the upgrades have to stay under the wife-radar as the previous car was the batchelor-mobile. with two cars, a house, a cottage, a boat, a PWC, an ATV and ... well, that stuff doesn't matter... mom and dad's house seems to be suiting you well. when you enter the real-world let me know and we'll chat.

thanks for the input and if you don't want my respect, you can't have it. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

BTW, it's "all due respect" not "do". learn english.

love,

Holy shit there is a lot of testosterone here.
Anyway I already did what Dave is so against and it works fine.
I got a pair of no name tweeters for 8 bucks (can get more if someone wants a pair) and installed them using thin double sided tape to the triangles on the other side of the mirror.

In my previous car (Tiburon SE) the tweeters were installed high on the dash right where it met the window. It was a factory setup running 6 speakers off a 140 watt Clarior CD. It kicked ass.

The reason why I did what I did (oh and by the way its running off the factory deck - don't freak out Dave) is to try to mimic the setup in the Tiburon. As far as I am concerned the sound originally sounded as if someone put a beach towel folded 17 times on top of my front speakers. I current run the dec with the bass all the way down and the tweets are connected to the front speakers. It's not a Harman Kardon but its got highs and the bass is coming from the trunk.

Its a veeeeery amateur setup but it works for now. So when the budget a boost this will take a hike for now it stays.

Hey everybody,

I had my components installed at Art of Noise, and low and behold, they were installed in the A pillar, where the window and mirror meet. Before the install, I asked where they were going to mount the tweeters. The answer I got was that they would install them where ever they would sound good. I had heard nothing but good things about Art of Noise, so, I let them do their thing. Personally, I don't think that the imaging is that bad. It all boils down to personal preference I guess. A comparison with someone who has their tweeters mounted closer to their drivers would interest me though.

Interesting.....They told me I shouldn't....

I went in there and told them I wanted them in the dash by the window(so the frequencies bounce off directly at me, or in the pillars...They ended up telling me, "Dont mount them in the pillars, you wont get a good sound outta it" and as far as mounting them in the dash they told me it would be risky for him to do it and more labour time because of the airbags, so inturn he said the best spot for me to put them was in the door above the handles....

like to know why they told you different though...
