Back in msport.net, there was an interest to powdercoating. Anyone still up for this?

Scooter
January 8th, 2003, 10:34 PM
I'm still in as long as the price is right. Just waiting to hear what Evo found out from his place.

I got a quote from another place in the GTA and it was as follows:

our pricing for rims is as follows,

stock standard colours, black white red etc @ $ 250.00 + taxes for all 4
rims
silver / metallic / aluminum with clear coat @ $350.00 + taxes for all 4
rims

We do not have a stock gun metal grey polyester therefore we would have
to bring in powder which would be extra charge, but as a guide,,,

40 rims all same colour approx $50.00 each
20 rims all same colour approx $65.00 each

below that the pricing would be based on a per set rate as quoted above,
also the cost of 25kgs powder would be approx $650.00

The prices quoted are to strip old finish, gritblast inside and out and
apply a nominal 4 mils powder coat finish to all surfaces, we do not do
any repairs of Any kind and you bring rims in with tires off. Any
questions please feel free to call.

Yours Truly

ACL

Ian Goulbourne

Doesn't look as promising as what Evo found,...hopefully his hook up will come through.

I am still in, but couple questions as to the powercoating.

1) the central cap, how are they paint them?? will the color fade faster than the rim??
2) since this powercoating is on top of our existing rim coating, how easy will it get rune??
3) does this powercoating cover the whole rim or just the front face??
4) colour to choose from?? or we give you a colour code??

THanx
evo once you get better, pls find out more detail.

Whoa!
That price has jumped along with the jump to this board.
I thought it was $25.00/rim. I'm gonna cut and paste the list....

Company name:
Spectrum Powder Coaters
63 Medulla Ave, Etobicoke
Phone: (416) 622-4595

I spoke with Alex, and these are highlights of our conversation.

- over 300 colours (weird-ass colours more expensive)
- $25 per individual rim, if we can get 100 individual rims he can knock the price down to $20 per individual rim
- they powdercoat the rims exactly as you give them to him (e.g. no cleaning, no fixing, etc.)
- clean your own rims before handing them over
- TIRES HAVE TO BE REMOVED

I will be going to the place sometime in the week of 12/23 to try to get more info....

*I am going to source a place that will mount/re-mount our tires for us without screwing up the rims, I will post updates here.*

HOW THIS IS GOING TO WORK: post in this thread and I will add your name to this list.

Due Date: After Christmas

Anyone know where Evo dissapeared to?

Does anyone remember where this place is that he got the quote at?

I'd like to get this done regardless. I think it was supposed to be $25 / rim either way,..and maybe $20 / rim if we got enough people which doesn't look like it's gonna' happen.

I'm fine w/ paying $25 if I know I'm gonna' get it done, I jsut need to know wher this place is. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Do you mean remove our TIRES for cheap?
I'm looking into that right now?
I'm gonna check some tire places in my hoof.
An independent should do it for cheap cash.

My rational is that if changing a flat is $11-15 dollars; then just to remove a tire and that is all, should be like 5-6 dollars/tire.

As for little imperfections, I'm gonna take the precaution and buy the highest grit sandpapers and smooth out some imperfections.

You would be much better of getting the rims sandblasted before powdercoating; it makes the coating adhere to the rim much better and will also resist chipping.

I'm in for a set of 4 White.

How soon does everyone want to do this?

I want to get it done before spring. That way for those of us that have winters on, we can easily get the summer rims done and not have to worry about what we're going to drive around on in the meantime.

Anyone have a good place for sandblasting the rims?

I'm looking into another place that'll do everything (not the other one that I posted). This one regularly charges about $50 / rim, so I'm going to see if I could arrange a cheaper price for a group-buy.

I'll keep you posted if I hear anything.

Yeah, I think so. I was talking to a buddy of mine a couple of days ago and he suggested a place. Kind of a friend of a friend type of thing. He said he's pretty sure they do everything and that they charge $50/rim (I'm going to try to talk that down though).

I haven't had a chance to look into it yet because I was out of town for the weekend. But I plan on talking to the guy sometime early this week (time permiting).

Also, to this powdercoating group.
Let's discuss some techniques in how to refinish and clean our rims. I know it's cold as Siberia out there but let's lay some brainstormed ideas out there.

1.Highpressure Warm Water Hose-downs.
2.Degreasers for brake and C.V. sludge on inside of rim.
3.Soft plastic dishwashing scrubber perhaps, for the inside sludge on the rim.
4.Finer grits of sand paper to smooth out imperfections.

I'll start a new thread for this...

I'm gonna actually drive down there in person on Friday morning when I get off nightshift work and get info first hand. I'm gonna contact the originator of the thread of the $25.00/rim company and see if the group deal he got is still on.

Actually I don't mind paying a bit more for professionally prepped and powdercoated wheels, but $125 per rims seems like a lot. However, if they are asking this price, then that may mean they are quite good. Of course, going the ghetto route and prepping ourselves is an option, but might not be ideal b/c of so many factors that could affect the overall durability of the powdercoat.

If it's less than $100 per rim (for full prep, clean, powdercoat), it's still a good deal.

BTW, where did Kurt get his stuff done?

Scooter
January 22nd, 2003, 05:28 PM
ok,..so here's the scoop.

I talked to the guy I bought my winter tires from. He made a few calls for me and found a place that would do them for about $200 - $250 a set. But then he mentioned something about labour charges after that. I'm pretty sure that includes cleaning, preppring and all that shizizy.

Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to him a second time, because he left me a message with the info at work.

I'm going to call him back tomorrow to get more info and to give him more info also. The guy he's talking to wanted to know tires size / shape, numbers, etc. I'm going to tell him that it would probably be about 10 sets, mostly stock five star 16's, and maybe 2 or 3 different colours (I know some want white, some gun metal, and some bronze).

I'll post more info tomorrow. I don't really want to spend more than $200 personally.

Please post any questions, comments, or concerns tonight if you want me to ask.

Funny how Markham Mazda never mentioned anything to me about that when they quoted a price double what I ended up paying doing it myself. And I'm sure they would have sent the tires back and pocketed that cash.

THIS POST HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPECTRUM'S PRICING, IT IS FOR ANOTHER OPTION

Ok, so as promised, here's my reply (better late than never). There's still a couple of uncertainties, but I can't really get any more info without knowing exact details. Also, because we're looking at 3 different colours (Gunmetal, White, Bronze), the price wouldn't be as cheap as it would if we were all getting the same. Anyway, here goes:

$200 - $250 / set + $20/wheel labour and shipping (price might drop a little depending on quantity, I said approx. 10 sets and they said it could be a little lower, but this is a basic range). The place removing the wheels etc. is in Markham and the Powdercoating place is in Concord (hence the shipping portion)

What does this include?
1) Most of us would like to get this done before spring so that we can keep our winter tires on. However, for those without that luxury, they will take your summer's off and could offer loaners for a nominal charge (not sure how much, but I'm sure it would be pretty reasonable).
2) Remove rubbers and Center Cap (if applicable) from rims (each person is to take their own rubbers home (no storing included)
3) No retouching of imperfections (if required and you request it be done, approx. $60 - $150 / rim depending on how bad they are)
4) Cleaning and Acid Bath of Rim
5) Powder Coating
6) Remount rubbers on rims
7) if required, remount wheels on car

That's pretty much all of the info I've gotten. The guy I'm dealing with (Dave at Steelcase Tires & Mags) doesn't actually do the powder coating, so it's hard for me to get all of the info. He would just be the one removing the rubbers etc. and outsourcing the powdercoating to a contact of his. I've dealt with Dave before and have been very impressed with his professionalism and workmanship, so I feel comfortable that he would get the job done well.

The price is higher than the original Spectrum post, so personally I would prefer the Spectrum route, but at least this is another option for anyone interested, or if Spectrum doesn't pan out. I'd prefer not to call him back until we have more concrete info, because he can't really narrow tihngs down any more than this until we have all of the details. So, hopefully we'll know a little more about the Spectrum thing soon and we can take it from there.

honestly,
for $200, it's a very good price,
since they do everything for you...
i really mean EVERYTHING......
cuz i was once quoted $150/rim....incredibility
expensive, and i heard someone in
the club had his MP3 rims done for $400...
come on guys, this is half price, pretty
good deal....
i'm in it if $200 is the price!

PS. may i also bring a set of IS300 rims to be powdercoated?

This is the best packaged offer to date with the services. The ghetto is screaming now!!!

With a bit more finalization and group commitment we can get this rolling sooner. I'm sure as hell in. We can soon discuss method of payment and make a group meet or handing in of our rims.

I'm still down like James Brown.

I haven't done the group-buy thing before, but I'm thinking for this situation (if we went this route), it would probably be easiest for everyone to just set a date that we would all make the drop at Steelcase (and make whatever payments directly, instead of through me,...so you know I'm not trying to pocket anything). That way you can take your rubbers home on the spot, and it avoids me having to figure out a way to transport 40 rims in the back of my P5 http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I'll wait to see more replies before we firm anything up though. If / when I see that most people are cool with this price, I'll start a new thread for this group buy.

Yellowmp5 - I don't see a problem with you bringing the other rims. I told them they would be mostly all Stock P5 - 5 stars, but there could be a couple of others. I can let you know for sure once we have enough commitment to bring this thing to reality though.

The price isn't exactly $200

The price is 200-250 + $20/per rim labour and shipping....

so that's $280-330 + shipping.

The $20/rim is including both Labour AND Shipping. It's basically just the cost to remove the rubbers etc. and send them to be powdercoated. ($10/rim for the work + $10/rim to ship there and back)

The $200 - $250 is the cost for the Cleaning and Powder coating portion (about $50 - $63 / rim)

i'm assuming cash and no tax?

also, not sure how well this shop does its powdercoating, but how long does a typical powdercoat job last? i don't want to fix a bad powdercoating job in the future....

$300 is still a very good price. My friend paid about $600 for his rims to powdercoat, but he had to refinish his. So it cost him a bit more. I'll called that place soon and see what they have to offer.
