I'm considering getting a cold air intake put in to my 2002 P5. I'm not going to jump into it immediately or anything but am definately giving it some serious thought. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any input / suggestions. I don't really know too much about what makes / models fit the P5 and the pro's and con's for each.

Anyone have any input based on what they've got, or have seen on others? How much should I be looking at for the intake + installation? I know it'll vary depending on the make (ie: Razo vs. AEM or whatever), but I'm looking for any input at all. Is it that easy? Even for someone that has no idea what the hell they're doing?

Is there anything else I need, or is that complete? Basically if I could get that for $450 or less it's a good deal then right? I'm just starting to research it, but will definately order from KDawg if the price is right (which from the sounds of it,......it probably will be).

THat's the one, not sure on price but it works pretty good and is p peace of cake to install, I think it might even come with directions.

You can expect to receive all sorts of answers and personal opinions on this. Seems from what I've read, most people prefer the Ingen CAI over the AEM and Ractive short rams. It also happens to be the priciest.
I bought the AEM short ram because I heard Ractive was poor quality and I didn't know the real difference between a short ram and a CAI. Also, Ractive was only available in that god-awful bright yellow and I wanted blue. Ingen was just too difficult for me to get in this area and the AEM was relatively cheap from the US, until I got hit with a brokerage fee of $60 (damn UPS!http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
The AEM designed for the auto tranny is shorter than the 5 speed version. In fact, it's quite short but sturdy. No home-made flimsy bracket required. It was easy to install, even for a beginner.
The CAI has the advantage of sucking colder air than a short ram. This is supposed to be superior. The advantage of the short ram, is it can stay put all year round. The CAI risks sucking in water and getting coated in crap unless you have some AEM bypass valve I believe. I still wouldn't trust a CAI in the wheel well during the winter months.
If I had to do it again, I would not have invested the money in the AEM. Looks ok in bright blue, but I don't feel it's superior to the K&amp;N drop in I had first. It does have a cool sound under hard acceleration, but I don't feel any noticable performance improvements.

First off,......I have to say, CarDamon,....that's some funny shit. I think I jsut pissed my pants,.....yup,...I did. Damn I hate when that happens!

03BluP5,...thanks for all of the info. Are there different designs depending on whether your car is auto or stick? That's the impression I was getting from something you said. If so,...I better figure that out before I buy anything. Damn,.....I'm just wating for a sales guy to take advantage of me. Somebody pass the lube, 'cause this is gonna' hurt.

Can you tell from the pic I posted, or the product name if it's short ram, or CAI? It said something about a bypass valve explaining that even if you were to be &quot;totally imersed in water, it would still be ok&quot;,...is that jsut marketing, or someting I should be worried about. If it sucks from the wheel well, I could see why that would be something to worry about. Just tonight with all of the rain, I was spraying water all over the place from my wells.

Anyway, I really appreaciate the help on this,....I definately don't want to just buy something with out being sure that I'm getting the right one.

the Injen fits both the auto and manual version of the Protege 2.0L engine. the AEM has 2 versions, one for the auto and one for the manual. essentially, they perform the same function, but the tubing is different. the auto is has shorter tubing while the manual has longer tubing and reaches down into the engine. there's a difference in the design b/c the auto tranny is larger and takes up more space.

the AEM bypass valve would be used with the Injen CAI. it supposedly works, but are you really going to drive through puddles large enough to flood your whole filter? for example, today it was raining hardcore and i drove through many puddles. my custom CAI remained intact and i did not flood my filter. many people who have the Injen CAI do not have an AEM bypass filter for various reasons (waste of money, don't believe the marketing, smart enough to drive in puddles deeper than their car... etc). for some, they probably buy it for the peace-of-mind.

my suggestion is don't get one!! get short ram!! my cold air flooded after i drove through unexpected 2 feet of water!! now the engine is dead =(

With the AEM water bypass valve you will be perfectly fine driving through any puddle that won't screw up your car if you didn't have an intake. What this bypass valve does is takes air from inside the engine bay if the filter is fully submerged in water. So when your filter is fully submerged you would see perfomance similar to a short ram style. Your car would breath through the bypass valve untill the filter was no longer submerged.

Sounds good. I think I would prefer to get the bypass valve jsut for the piece of mind. I wouldn't want to end up in a situation like MixedAznBoy. That was actually what I was afraid of,...especially after that monsoon last night.
