I get my oil changes for $25. But I'm not too sure what the going rate is either. I think my shop uses Castrol oil,.....not sure what type http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif

As Raymond mentioned in the News forum, Mazda has a fixed price for oil change of something like $27. Although that may not include oil, and you can bring whatever you want.
Motul oil seems like a bit of overkill .. Mobil1 is what, $25/4L or something? I wouldn't want to leave the same oil in my engine for 20,000 Kms no matter what kind it is http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

65 bucks for motul is not bad.. Ur talking about Motul
Man.. ur got to fork out the money if you want that in ur car... cus if you think 65 Bucks for that is a Rip off..don't think u want to use REDLINE Oil either....
And i totally agree with Rowan i would never keep oil in the engine that long.. doesn't matter what u tell me.. (i always change it a 5000kms)

Well personally I've never heard of "motul" and I would Never use it!
Oils of choice:
I think its called "purple magic" or something
Redline
Mobil 1
Castrol GTX
If your car is under warranty, get it done by a shop for sure. If not grab your oil of choice, and do it youself http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

WTF?? Motul has been making lubricants since the early days of racing in Europe. Fuck all that USA Nascar crap.
Redline is probably good but nothing that them left-turn guys use is going into my car ....
Mobil-1 is the only other decent oil because it is still a true synthetic, not just a blend with some synthetic mixed in like most others.

Please tell me why I should have a shop do my oil change if my car is under warranty? Why not?
Anyone who does not know Motul oil and uses something that he think is called "purple magic" should not be giving advice regarding engine lubricants!

Sorry I wasn't quite sure of the name of the product, I thought it was purple...something, referred to me by Machinists and Mechanics who work on race engines.
Again I'm sorry I haven't heard of motul, don't cast stones at me.
And don't forget I'm coming from a totally different perspective here, my choices, are what I, and many other MX-3 owners would put in our 2.5L V6 engines.
Trust me, my last car I did everthing possible to void my warranty, and it's a kick in the nuts when it turns against you.

HAHAHA!!!! NASCAR is a joke!! Worst part, my mom LOVES it, so I can't dis it around her....although I do..nothing like pushrod engines, and 15 second pitstops to get me egging her on.....
I use Castrol Syntec, but I have to get shops to do it for another 4000k, or I void my warrenty...true say Dave, I see no reason I can't do it myself...I guess they just need proof that's it done regularly.

That is my greatest concern too!
I don't want a weasel dealership to back out on my warranty when I need them like Statutory Rape Farm Insurance Company.
Like a good neighbour they should be there. Until then, I'll be the guy who goes over and asks for a cup of their sugar and return the favour. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

Dave you're one to talk the other night at shoeless joes I recall you saying that the protege has 2 catalytic converters? WTF? when we were talking about j-spec headers?
Besides I did my own engine swap on my MX-3, I think I know a thing or two about what lubricants to use.
And whether you're driving nascar, F1, or Rally it's best to choose the right oil for the right application http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Spoken by a true idiot, who knows nothing about everything.
Why would you NOT get it done in a shop? Especially when it's under warrenty. Records and history are a big part in vehicle maintence.
If Me and my buddy were selling you a car, would you buy the car that had a record of oil changes and history, or would you by "Mr.Rice"'s car who has always said he has done his oil changes and maintenece to his car himself to save a measly 24 bucks?? Keep doing shit yourself and see how much you get for that car when you trade it in to buy your used Honda Civic EX "coupe".
Just because a car is under warrenty doesn't give you the right ot go off on a tangent and do what u want to a car always thinking that the warrenty is there for a safety net, because I gaurentee the dealer will be more then anxious to void your warentty and charge you $71.00 an hr labour when u fuck up.

Yea this is comming from a guy who thinks there are 2 cat's on a mazda fuckin protege. WOW that must be a RAM AIR supercharged V8 dual exhaust you have running under that family sedan. Id rather take advice from MAZDASPEED STEVE who has done an engine swap in his life there buddy.
owned.
BTW Motual sucks ass. Another hyped "sport compact car" part that does fuck all. The best parts and the best lubs are the ones that the company designed for your car. That includes oil filters. The only part that really would probably make a difference is a K&N, and that's not much.
I'm not saying that performance lubs and parts are not good, but they are usually used when an engine is a little more souped up then a "cold air intake and exhaust w/rims and toyo tires." I can see if you were running a turbo with 7-10 pounds of pressure, but your running a "2L FAMILY SEDAN!!!!!!!!!!!"
Why throw your money away on a car that's build by Ford anyway? Use it for what it's meant for...good fuel economy, and when you get your dream job paying you lots of cash, then buy a car that is created for speed.
Plz excuse my spelling, and go ahead and boot me.

November 9th, 2002, 12:57 PM
Oh, back on topic ... $65 isn't all that bad I suppose if it includes the oil and filter .. just check what kind of Motul it is as they have many different kinds.
Do you want to go with synthetic or "dino" oil? Have you put any other kind of synthetic in already? If I can remember correctly, switching between different brands of synthetic is not recommended? (could be just marketing bs though).
--
Hahaha... yeah hmm Motul must really suck. All those teams in WRC, Moto GP, etc are just lemmings that follow whatever the magazines say .. *lol*
There are practically no shops that even carry Motul .. how is it hyped? I don't remember seeing Motul ads in american ricer mags .. usually only in actual motorsport publications. On the other hand, Redline and K&N are plastered all over the place.
*lol* Proteges are built by ford *lol* ...
Proteges have 2 cats? Hmm let me check my workshop manual ... Yup there we go:
3 - TWC (three-way catalytic converter)
6 - WU-TWC (Warm up three-way Catalytic Converter)
It's part of how it keeps a ULEV emissions rating.
I think the warm weather is melting people's brains today...
--
No one ever said to put race-quality oil in his car, he just asked a question about getting a change that included Motul oil. If you don't run your car hard then you will be just find with dino oil but it's not like you're going to hurt anything with higher-quality oil if you want it.

Again staying on topic... use what's best for your appplication.
I just never ever seen Motul sponsered vehicles, or heard of this product.
But I know Royal Purple kicks ass, and you don't see banners for that anywhere. And I suggest using a Mazda or K&N oil filters (Mazda's is less $$http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif only because there's a built in valve to prevent dry starts.
Rowan you're absolutely right, the protege does have a TWC(three-way catalytic converter) Singular (only one) that doesn't mean there's 3 of them.
I think we should just agree to disagree on choice of oil, this thread has gone on long enough yes/no?
rowan
November 9th, 2002, 02:08 PM
The WU-TWC and TWC are two separate items in the exhaust system.
(The 3 and 6 were what they were numbered on the diagram, that's all)

Steve still think you bought a car with only one cat? Before you descide to swap your Pro's engine make sure you install your Ractive intake better so that other solenoids don't get caught in your throttle body and cause your new car to get better acquainted with your rev limiter.... BTW if you need it I have more zip ties for you. And if you're too scared to open the hood and find out what's wrong for yourself I'll always do it for you.
Destructo, the TPC has strong ties with our sponsoring dealerships. When I complained about my stabilizer bar they replaced it under warranty although my car is lowered. I have also had other warranty work done on my car despite it having an intake or exhaust, etc. I don't expect them to be understanding of mods relating to the internals of the engine (cams, turbo, nos, piggy back comps, etc) but mild mods are accomidated by our Sponsoring dealerships. Our warranties are not as fragile as you make them sound to be.
Lastly ... "Owned"?... LOL are you serious? I'll do all the "owning" here - BTW do I sound cool now?

Yip 2 cats. Mp5Navy should know he has a pretty sweet exaust. Almost as sweet as mine.
I do my own oil changes too even though my cars under warranty. My dealer said it would be OK because I still buy my oil filters there. Sure they would use it to avoid warrantying stuff but Im not going to let some apprentice crank my drain plug tight just to keep my warranty. I plan to keep my car long after its up.

Hay Destructo how did u figure the Protege is built by FORD? Cus i see the Ford logo on it... Do u even know what the JM1BJ or your VIN even stands for?? J=Japanese M=Mazda BJ is the engine type. This car is bulit in JAPAN at the HIROSHIMA FACTORY FOR YOU INFO... DON'T BE SAYING THINGS YOU HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT. Sorry guys i just feel bad for someone who knows so much. And damn man ur really smart how did u know that our cars are sedans.. did u go to the bridgestone racing school to know this? I guess if you were lucky enought to drive a mazdaspeed protege or a JDM 2.0L Protege.. u wouldn't say that..
But does it really matter which oil you use?? I mean if i want to use motul, or red line, or that purple thing.. who cares man... You use what u want.. its a free country!! Wasn't the topic about $65 for a motul expensive... http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif
And about the warranty thing.. any type of intake (using a K&N) can void the warranty.. ... using anything NOT mazda can void your warranty.. Cus its no longer factory spec..
