Just a quick question to see if anyone is getting th gas mileage that I am. I filled my sedan up, not really topping it right to the brim or anything and I have been doing mainly highway driving. But I am just below a 1/2 tank and i have driven 430kms...Is this strange.. I usually only get 575 to 600 per tank??

Auto or 5spd? And you probably drive very conservatively

I've topped out my tank at around 800K, but normal daily driving doesn't get me that far. Usually around 550-600 a tank normal driving. 5spd

5spd...not so conservative...haha..maybe a little slower this tank though, we have had a little snow

During the summer I was getting 500-600 kms per tankful.
With the cold weather I'm getting <500 kms. My car is a 1.6 323 SOHC, 5 speed.

Hahahah,...you and me both dude.

Must be something about the way we drive. I was getting jsut over 350K during the summer (with AC on all of the time),....now that I don't use it (or the defrost), I figured my K's would go way up. But I'm still only getting about 400 / tank.

http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif wow!!! that's amazing how some of u guys get so much on a tank. i get on average...450km on a tank. if i'm really cheap, and drive like a old lady i think i can squeeze 500km.

Are those of you with the big numbers using high grade gas, cuz i think I'm more in the my_mp5's type of numbers. Of course, I'm driving highways at 130 all the time... and also living downtown can't help those numbers....

but i use 87 from PC.

Jeez, I'm lucky if I get 250km from the first half of my tank, and thats with a bunch of highway driving thrown in.
After that I'll get maybe another 200 or so. Sometimes if I'm doing all highway I'll hit 300km on the first half. The second half I'm really not so sure about because I usually fill up before a quarter tank, so that other 200 that I get could be more if I really pushed it. I think its because my tank is small its only about 35l

Im in there aswell. Im lucky if I can get 500km outta my tank. On average I put in 20 bucks every other day. (Roughly....sometimes I can go three days, other times I fill up everyday). Its gotta be our driving. I dont know, I am heavy on accelerating(always redlining in first and sometimes second), and I have noticed that at high speeds on the highway (150-160) that my car guzzles the gas aswell. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

THe number of kms does not correspond equally to the location fo the needle. You can get 400 in the rist half and then 200-250 in the last. It only makes sens that the gauge is more sensitive on the bottom when it matters most. Not sure but it could be the shape of the tank? Just a guess though.

I'm lucky if I get 400kms on a tank now. Sudden drop in gas mileage...it's poopy. Any suggestions as to why this happened?!! I haven't changed my driving habits either...highway/city, speed, etc.none of that has changed. I went from getting 550 to 400kms to a tank...in one tank of gas...did 550 on one...then 400kms on the next. Me confused, very confused. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

based on mazda provided numbers, these are the following mileage you can get:

Manual Transmission:
City - 9.6L/100KM = 572.92KM on one full (55L) tank
Highway - 7.3L/100KM = 753.42KM on one full (55L) tank
50/50 - 8.45L/100KM = 650.89KM on one full (55L) tank

assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 46L, then you should get about 544.38KM
assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 44L, then you should get about 520.71KM
assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 42L, then you should get about 497.04KM
assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 40L, then you should get about 473.37KM

Automatic Transmission:
City - 9.9L/100KM = 555.56KM on one full (55L) tank
Highway - 7.4L/100KM = 743.24KM on one full (55L) tank
50/50 - 8.65L/100KM = 635.84KM on one full (55L) tank

assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 46L, then you should get about 531.79KM
assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 44L, then you should get about 508.67KM
assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 42L, then you should get about 485.55KM
assuming 50/50 and you fill up around 40L, then you should get about 462.43KM

I'm assuming this is based on optimal driving conditions (i.e. no wind, no aerodynamic resistance).......and definitely no lead-foot drivers........only grannies wanted.....hahahaha......

Do you have some sort of of aftermarket intake, new wires And your Muffler? When these things were installed have you reset your ECU.

I hear guys talk about removing the positive battery cable for at least 20min to reset the system. Somebody please confirm this and the procedure.

My intake and exhaust was installed long before this gas mileage problem started....and besides..once I had both changed I was getting better gas mileage.

I have found that resetting the ECU is only good if you would like to realise the full potential of your new installation right away. The computer in our cars learn very fast, often times within 20-30 kms. It will compensate for the added air and will will allow fuel accordingly, regardless if you reset it or not.

really?? so you're saying that there's technically no need to reset the CPU because it will sort of do it by itself??? sweet.......and here i was going to reset my ECU after i installed my intake because i thought we needed to if we want to make use of it.......no more work needed........i like!! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Ironically some of us were talking about this, and switching to a higher octane gas which costs a little more got better gas mileage. It evened itself out economically; the price of paying a little higher up front for gas, by the extended gas milage we got.

Personally I lug probably and extra 65-75lbs because of my ghetto sound box and now the heavy duty hydralic jack. I hit around the 500-515km on 44L mark right when the light comes on but I don't do this very often.

I need to get more conscious of my driving habits, cause I do the occasional 130km/hr cruise when I'm in no rush to go somewhere on the highway when 110km/hr could do. And the jackrabbit starts as I get taken up with the civics, sunfires and cavaliers.
This week when I fill-up I'm gonna try not to go over 110km/hr till the next fill up.

One time I got 608km to the tank on 90% highway. I should cruise more with the stick shift on off ramps more than usual and anticipate traffic more too.

I've been chewing on the claim of 800 km/tank for days now and not sure what to think.
My handy calculator tells me that if you run completely out of gas (55 litres), that would indicate 41 mpg. Now of course you don't run completely out, so you probably get 42-43 mpg.
Since Mazda claims the 5 speed can return 39 mpg under "ideal conditions", I guess this claim isn't too far off, although no one else has posted anything near 800 km.
I can only assume to get this kind of mileage, you would drive downwind in 5th gear @ 40-50 km/hr. I can't see this figure if you drove 100km/hr and mixed highway/city.
Jika: do you claim to get this kind of mileage more than once? Wanna share your secret? Did you swap engines with the VW 1.9L TDI? Disconnect two spark plug wires?
I sometimes drove my '02 auto conservatively and managed just over 600 km a few tanks on highway trips @ ~90 km/hr. That's still a far cry from 800 km!

Quick question, for those that track their gas mileage, at what point does your YELLOW gas indicator light come on?

Sorry for digging up such an old message thread.... was searching in vain for the answer on the site so I figured I'd ask.

Background Info:

Automatic Transmission

mid-grade - 89 octane gas

I've had my car for 7 months. During the summer months until say November with 50/50 driving the LIGHT went off on average at the 425 KM mark.

Now since November in winter driving, it goes off at the 385 KM mark.

I do tend to have a heavy foot, 70-80 KMH in the city and on the highway 130-140 KMH.

During the Summer A/C was blowing, during the winter the heat is on the 2 setting most of the time.

Just want to get an idea of what the group is getting at the instant that good ol' light comes on.

Thanks folks.....np5

I'm getting crappy gas mileage on the automatic p5. Light usually comes on at about 325-350 nowadays.

On the 5sp usually comes on at about 475-500.

1. When you use Defrost, the AC is automatically on
2. Better breathing car will give better gas mileage
3. Use the gas your car was designed for. i.e. no high octane in Protege5/ES .. waste of money and possibly incomplete combustion
4. It's Winter. All gas companies are now putting tons of winter additives and fuel system cleaners into the gas which could explain the drop in mileage from Summer to Winter
5. Colder & denser air = happier engine = can use more fuel and should be slightly better on power.

My last 10 fill-ups since January. It's about 10.070 L/100Km - 27.933 MPG for 10 fill-ups. so that's obviously way higher than what Mazda has stated for AT. I commute downtown everyday, so my highway/city is probably 70/30. I noticed an increased in fuel economy when I used Premium gas from PetroCan. Those were usually the times when I blasted to Blue Mtn for the weekend. Other than that, it's pretty average. You guys should use this too: T.O. Gas Prices (http://www.togasprices.com/)

The 800KM from one tank I got was only in the summer last year, and the car was only two months old then. The trip I took was pretty much all highway, not exceeding 110 km/h doing roughly 100km/h most of the time. This was also before I installed my Ractive intake.

Aurora to Sibbald Point = 50km
Sibbald Point to Aurora = 50km
Aurora to cottage on Bruce Pennisula = 250km
Bruce Pennisula to Aurora = 250km
Gas light on at this point
Aurora back to sibbald Point = 50km
sibbald point back to Aurora = 50km

these figures will include some very low KM's for tooling around (such as picking up a friend 4km away from my house, etc.) but for the most part pretty direct driving.

Similar trip in november with a loaded car from Aurora to Parry Sound and back, with some hauling around up there (probably 50K or so), intake installed, rather cold out, winter tires on. Gas light comes on on the way back just north of Barrie on the 400 doing about 120 or so (oh btw we did about 140 on the way up).

i would guess about 600 K or more for the parry sound trip?

See if my math is right on this one.

The P5 is listed as having a highway fuel economy of 7.3L/100km & 9.6 city (5spd)

If you say a 55L tank, and only highway driving should get you 753KM per tank.

If we average out city & highway we should be getting 650KM per tank.

Actually, if you compare the fuel economy of the 2.0, it is really crap compared to other vehicles of the same performance.

Did you know that the Accord V6-3.0 Automatic & a manual 2.8-V6 Golf or Jetta, also gets 7.3L/100KM on the highway?

Hasn't anyone else noticed that the P5 manual revs kinda high at highway speeds?

Anyone know where we can get a 6-speed gearbox?

Jika
March 3rd, 2003, 07:50 PM
you're comparing our 4bangers to 6cyls. fuel economy really won't be that much different since the 6cyls ratios will be different. I believe there was a thread about it with the new mustang relating to RPM's of the P5 at the same speed, which were almost double that of the mustang's.

Don't forget about sow tires in the winter. They have much higher rolling resistance than the "all sesason" stockers or high performance variety.

Also driving in snow covered roads increases resistance as well.

With the stock tires on I was averaging 8L/100km mixed city/ hwy.

Now with the winters on I average 9-10L/100km mixed city/hwy

im not sure what to think now. my mileage is down from i was getting before. highway driving usually tops out around 600 650 k now but im getting roughly 500. changed air filter and spark plugs, minor improvement.
