I was told by a few people that I need a block heater in Calgary. Is this true? Any comments from those who have lived in cow town?
I figure with the discount coupon from Mazda, I can get it done in TO cheaper than in Calgary (even though there will be no PST there ...). So I want to find out ASAP to tag onto my service appointment this Sat.
Many thanks.

dunno bout cowtown, but i think in the 'peg its mandatory to sell cars with blocks...
(dunno where i heard it, but hey... i also heard that many places of business had electrical outlets to plug into while employees were at work, if they had to park outside.)
I'm assuming that it's gonna get pretty cold in cowtown, and a block is never really a bad thing... especially when it's compared to not having one, and having to jump it everymorning...

Get the block heater. When I was out there a few years ago you can plug them in at parking lots and some parking meters. It really does get that cold out there.

mine has one, and from my experience of living out there, I plugged it in most of Jan. At work we even had plug-ins at every stall...nice touch by our employer.

get the block heater but be careful because our engine blocks are aluminum and may warp when using a block heater.........

I believe only the head is aluminum. The block is cast iron, is it not?

Hell Yes!!
Get one!
It is a more dry cold out there, the type of which the snow squeeks and your nostril hairs freeze. Watch out for your spiked hair and the damage it can do when its frozen.
At your residence, hook it up to a to a NOMA Electrical Outdoor/Indoor Timer so it comes on 2-3hrs before you actually start up your car to go to work in the morning.

Thanks for the advice! I have ordered the stock Mazda block heater & will get it installed this weekend. I guess it would not wreck the car?! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif

Yeah, forget about that... timers are very good for pluggin it in... plus you might want to consider a remote starter if you're gonna be leaving it outside - just to toast it up inside for ya in the morning...
