If birth dates set the pecking order, we'd have similarly low expectations for Mazda's 1999-intro Protegé. But this car has always been an overachiever. It copped the top spot in our last econocar comparison ("Little Cars 6.1," June 2000) for a reason that usually proves enduring — it's really a kick to drive.

Could an aging sporty sedan hold its place against the inexorably rising tide of technology? Let's hit the road and find out.

I laugh at the fact that the Honda Civic was beaten by the Ford Focus. Too much of anything is bad, we need more proteges and less civics.

I think not just the Protege is under rated. But i think Mazda as a whole has been under rated!!.. I mean Mazda was the first Japanese Auto Company to win in the La mans (typo?) with the RX-7!!!.. and they have made one the fasters if not better cars from Honda's and Toyota's.......

Mazda won Le Mans with the 787B which was a 4-rotor .. after which the Le Mans officials promptly outlawed rotary engines *lol* Damned Ferrari whiny bitches.... http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Can't wait to see Mazda in the ALMS series, and if someone decides to run an RX-8 in the GT series.....
